    Stan Getz

Stan Getz - "My Foolish Heart: Live at the Left Bank" w/Richie Beirach (piano), Dave Holland (bass), and Jack DeJohnette (drums) Just picked this up from eMusic and it's smokin'. Very much in the style of the "Captain Marvel" album and this band ain't half bad, either.

  4. I heard this in the used record store a few months ago and thought it sounded pretty smokin' at the time. Maybe I should pick it up next time I'm in there. I think they still have it featured on the wall, actually.

  7. Interesting what Yanow says about it on AMG: Phineas Newborn's Contemporary debut (he would record six albums over a 15-year period for the label) was made just before physical problems began to interrupt his career. This CD reissue has two trio sessions, and finds Newborn joined by either bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones or bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes. Actually, the accompaniment is not that significant, for the virtuosic Newborn is essentially the whole show anyway. He performs five jazz standards and three obscurities by jazz composers on this superb recital; highlights include "Cheryl," "Manteca," "Daahoud," and "Oleo."

  16. I have the Jackie McLean Mosaic. There's some harshness there, too. But not as bad, somehow. I guess I might compare it to Charles Tolliver's "Impact" album. As much as I LOVE Tolliver's work, this was just unlistenable for me.

  21. Only slightly off-topic. I did a search on Netflix for Phineas - hoping that the TV show might be available - and it gave me this: "Breakin' (1984)" The credits included THIS - Phineas Newborn III Interesting ...

  24. FWIW, Hardbopjazz, if you haven't checked out eMusic yet, you can get most all of his albums there, including Roy Haynes' "We Three". At $10/month for 40 tunes, it's a quick and cheap way to build up your Phineas collection. If you only do the free 50-song trial, you could get most of these for nuthin' !
