  1. Blue Note-Toshiba 1500 series LP, mono.
  2. More Charles Tolliver, and another good record:
  3. Tolliver/Music Inc, LIVE IN TOKYO. Strata-East, white label promo copy.
  4. The Riddler Nelson Riddle Full Nelson
  5. Right on both counts. I just don't come across these titles every day, so I also picked up: and: Each well under $10 (I think they were promo copies). Figured I wasn't getting the ultimate in vinyl, but they would get me by until something better came along. Lee-Way. Try to find : Super Fidelity Indeed! I have several Conns vinyl but not that one. Would be nice.....or the King Records

  7. The Three Sounds The Three Blind Mice The Three Musketeers
  8. BST-84321, "van gelder" in the deadwax.
  9. Those are pressed by Rainbo Records in CA and they are from a digital source. While they're supposed to sound fine, I don't see the point of 'em. It's just the CD with clicks, pops & surface noise added. Yes, that doesn't surprise me. The sound is just ok, if that. Not much surface noise. The covers "pop" though ! Thanks Kevin.
  10. Marquise De Sade Juliette O
  11. I haven't heard that in a while, but I recall thinking it was better than it was given credit for. Maybe too much is/was expected of the hook-up, but it's a very good date by any standard (of course IMO).
  12. So I picked up a couple of LT-series BN LPs. The odd thing is they use the King Records LP covers rather than the typical LT covers when initially issued. These are definitely not King reissues, and I believe they are recent BN reissues, but I don't see anything in Discogs on a new reissue. Anyone know who did the reissue? Here's the Blue Mitchell:
  13. Beelzebub Puff the Magic Dragon Dragon Lady
  14. On the jacket, Lateef is quoted as saying (responding to the assertion that he only played "Eastern music"): "I have no definite set path in front of me, I am trying to see that everything I do is sincere and not for effect." A good credo. I've had this LP for years, and doubt I paid more than a few bucks for it. Turns out to be a mono deep groove, RVG in the deadwax/ Prestige New Jazz, so that was nice.

    Herb Geller RIP

And I'm sawing away at that limb. BTW, Geller said in an interview somewhere that Pepper in his mid-to-late-'50s prime was no great shakes in his opinion, although I don't recall whether Geller also said that he himself was a much better player. Don't get me wrong, I like Geller, although his solos do seem rather same-y after a while; and when it comes to rhythmic variety, tonal flexibility, long-range logic of construction, you name it, prime Pepper was in another realm altogether. Also, BTW, check out if you can Gene Quill's solo on "I Feel Pretty" on Manny Albam's "West Side Story" album. Remarkably loose, wild, and fluid. I wonder if he ever said that to Art directly? Somehow I doubt it.

  17. OK, thanks.
  18. So, is the revised version of "Heavyweight Champion" also a remastered version? Or has the packaging just been slimmed down?
  19. He always seemed the essence of cool to me, and he made jazz look like an adventurous and fascinating trip (which it is). From what I can tell, many others felt the same way. Thanks and RIP.
  20. Saw Steve at the Mephista+Lotte Anker show, then caught Lotte with Gerald Cleaver and Craig Taborn at IBeam, Brooklyn, the next night, then back to The Stone on Saturday for Lotte with Fred Frith and Ikue Mori (1st set), then with Jim Black aded to that trio for the 2nd set. Some great music making all around. First saw Lotte in Baltimore several years ago, also with Sylvie Courvoisier and Ikue Mori (Alien Huddle). If you want to check out Lotte's playing, try "Floating Islands" or the new Clean Feed disc. Nice seeing you there Steve.
  21. That is great news! Thanks! Edit: See, wishes can come true, LOL.
  22. I mentioned this over in the Vinyl thread, but it would be nice, if it were possible, to see a Mosaic big box of Horace Tapscott Interplay and Nimbus recordings. Also maybe some things like the Sonny Criss Orchestra, Sonny's Dream," also included. A reissue of "The Giant is Awakened" on Flying Dutchman would be fantastic. If it couldn't be included in the box, it would be nice to see Jonathan at International Phonograph give it his usual high-quality treatment.
  23. Me too. Great album. I must get this one day. My Tapscott collection is very incomplete...I only own "The Giant Is Awakened" on Flying Dutchman and that is a killer album. I think I've been outbid on "Dial B for Barbara" about 10 times over the years I have "Dial B for Barbara" on a Nimbus West CD; at one time that seemed fairly available around here (I bought it in a CD shop 4 or 5 years). However, have yet to see a copy of "The Giant is Awakened," which seems to have become quite scarce and expensive. Such are the vagaries of record collecting!
