    Don Cherry

I had a chance to listen to it beforehand and decided I didn't need it. Maybe I'm just "over" Cherry, but the later heterogeneous playing doesn't do much for me.

  3. That's too bad. I've been to a number of his concerts, to the point he would stop and chat a bit. Very personable. He could definitely bring it in performance. Last saw him at 2013 Vision Fest and he did not look or play like his usual self. RIP Roy.
  4. Pete LaRoca, John Gilmore, Chick Corea, and Walter Booker. That's a nice group, and this is a nice album. So nice it's also been issued under Corea's name as "Bliss." The Douglas reissue vinyl is not so good.

    Kind of Bloop

It seems like the answer to a question that was never asked. Maybe this is what all music will sound like in 2914.
  7. Marco Polo Pierre, or the Ambiguities White-Jacket
  8. WHAT/IF/THEY BOTH COULD FLY - Evan Parker (ts) and Joe McPhee (pocket tp, ss). Rune Grammofone LP. Comes with a CD as well, for the undecided or ambivalent I assume. The title reminds me of that cheesy pop song.
  9. Booker Ervin – “The Book Cooks” • Booker Little – “Booker Little and Friend” • Charles Mingus – “The Jazz Experiments of Charles Mingus”
  10. I've got an order to US on the way now, 2 SHM-CDs (a 3rd could not be supplied). Shipping will vary by type of shipping chosen, from the slowest, least trackable, to the quickest most trackable (to put it basically). CD Japan recommends the latter, and it cost me $14.00, which is rather steep. However, I thought the prices and availability mostly offset the shipping charge. YMMV. EDIT to respond to your other questions. If the item is stated as "In stock." it will ship out quickly. Estimate 3-7 days to arrive. If not in stock, and it says 3-7 days to supply, that could take a while. I waited for the item I dropped for 3 weeks before telling them to drop it, and ship the other 2. No import duty AFAIK.
  11. SHIFT: Mats Gustafsson, on bari, with piano trio Correction. No Business LP. This works pretty well. Mats plays out but not outrageous (for Mats). Strange though, there were at least a few times that Mats' playing called to mind that of Evan Parker, despite the difference in instrumentation. BTW, the vinyl is pretty nice.

  13. Since we are talking about Joe Henderson, I only listened to this album ("Barcelona" on Enja) recently, but I totally dug it. It's JH playing in almost free mode (and sometimes no-almost), especially on the long title track. As far as "State of the Tenor" I finally corralled both volumes on LP (I think I only had Vo. 1 ), and again, I thought the performance was really interesting, lots of in-out playing, and the sound did not bother me at all.
  14. Nat Adderley, LIVE AT MEMORY LANE, Atlantic mono gatefold. Nat with Joe Henderson, Joe Zawinul, Victor Gaskin, and Roy McCurdy. It's Joe that really makes this session for me.

  17. Leo Smith & New Dalta Ahkri: GO IN NUMBERS. Black Saint LP. With Leo Smith, Dwight Andrews, Bobby Naughton, Wes Brown. Recorded 1980.
  18. King Crimson double CD for "RED" and "LARK'S TONGUE IN ASPIC." Also pre-ordered 2 of the forthcoming Blue Note XRCDs, "THE BIG BEAT" and "LD+3."
  19. The United Jazz+Rock Ensemble, LIVE IN BERLIN, Mood Records 2LP. Going through some unsorted/unshelved LPs in my collection and found this one. Lots of interesting people on here: Charles Mariano, Eberhard Weber, Kenny Wheeler, Ian Carr, Albert Mangelsdorff, et al.
  20. Curt Flood Curt Schilling Curtis Mayfield

  23. In July of last year, I got interested in Stanley Turrentine, sort of out of the blue, since I had not listened to him in several years IIRC. So in short order, I played "Another Story," "A Chip Off the Old Block," "Dearly Beloved," "Hustlin'," "The Spoiler," "Shirley Scott with Stanley Turrentine," and maybe one or two others. I really enjoyed listening to Stanley. I thought his tenor playing had some quirks or little "moves" that added interest, hard to describe better. It was a highly expressive style. Anyway, I found him more interesting, and more enjoyable, than I had previously.
  24. King Records pressing.
