  1. Inspired by Uli's post, I pulled the only Anthony Davis LP I have off the shelf and gave it a spin. Good stuff, a mix of free jazz, orchestrated music and modern classical composition. Pretty nice.
  2. Having been in the hospital myself a few times recently, I can definitely relate to your situation. Stay positive (it helps the patient) and best wishes. Edited to add a note regarding the actual heading of the thread: yes, showing and speaking your love is important. Life is uncertain.
  3. On Red Record/Vedette Records. A very fine session.
  4. Ethic Heritage Ensemble, "Impressions," Red Record. Kahil El' Zabar, Ed Wilkerson, Henry "Light" Huff. A beautiful record, with almost a Zen feel at times.
  5. Sally Rand Rand Corporation Rand McNally
  6. I first read "WAR AND PEACE" about 20 years ago, remembered some of it, but not all, and was too busy keeping track of who was who to get a good idea of Tolstoy's aims and methods. Anyway, I thought it was time for a re-reading and just finished Rosemary Edmonds 2nd translation version, in the fat one-volume Penguin edition. I know there are flashier versions but I like hers. As I have some training in Russian, and my wife is Russian, I can usually detect false notes. Anyway, I think she captures Lev Tolstoy's voice here consistently. Having read the novel, I realized that I thought I knew a lot about Tolstoy but really did not, just what Russians hand down among themselves, part fact, part fiction, part legend. So I am now reading A. N. Wilson's "TOLSTOY," which I am finding informative and entertaining (yep). Wilson is one of those writers who seem to come in for more than their share of criticism in the literary world. But I find this book very much in the Oxbridge tradition of extensive learning presented lucidly and engagingly.
  7. This is one I particularly enjoy. May not blow you away on a clip or a quick first listen but it just builds in interest on each successive listen.
  8. That is hilarious! Since I'm a Pitt fan I found it all doubly amusing. The only thing I can think is that the story was filed after midnight (12:23AM), by which time the reporter was probably pretty tired and I suspect quite sloshed, if you get my drift.
  9. A bit of a side trip to check out someone I heard of, but had not heard:
  10. Like a number of folks on the Board, I wanted to make an offering for Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre's passing. On Cadence Jazz, "Ram's Run." The back cover of the sleeve has a very thoughtful interview with KMM, in typical Cadence style. On Black Saint, Peace and Blessing." A fairly obscure group but they play wonderfully: KMM (ts, fl, bcl, cl, perc), Longineu Parsons (tp, flugelhorn, fl, soprano, recorders), Leonard Jones (b), King L. Mock (d). On Delmark, "Humility in the Light of Creator." Larger group featuring such AACm members as Leo Smith, Malachi Favors, Thurman Barker, and Claudine Myers. The vocals on Side 1 by George Hines contribute to the albums deeply spiritual feeling. A remarkable musical spirit.
  11. This is how I use it too. It's early days as I've only been using it for just over a month. I'm surprised how poor the interface is and how little information is given. You either need to know what you're looking for or just don't care. The competition is already nipping at their heels, and th einterface appears to be their AChille's heel (for tech types and "fashion forward" guys): http://www.businessinsider.com/why-you-should-switch-spotify-to-rdio-2013-11 And the description of Daniel Eck in the original article: "His scalp and chin have equal amounts of stubble, which makes his head look reversible." Ouch! That's a bit personal.
  12. I remember seeing him in NYC a number of years ago at a Vision Fest concert. He very quietly and without fanfare (looking like he just came from busking on the streets) joined the group already on stage and I remember being really impressed by his sound and his approach that stood out even in the large group free blow-out that was going on. One of those moments you don't forget.
  13. Spoken like a true 5-Star member . (well-deserved) But I still don't get it. Maybe it's a carryover from some earlier version of the Board.
  14. @JeffCrom: Happened to pick up the Bob Brookmeyer "7XWilder" LP on Impulse! Nice album. Elton Dean, Hugh Hopper, Alan Gowen, Pip Pyle, with Radu Malfatti and Marc Charig on a track.
  15. Taylor Ho Bynum Sextet tomorrow, Steve Lehman Octet Wednesday, in DC.
  16. Hasn't Thom Yorke of Radiohead been leading the charge against Spotify not paying artists properly? I don't know how that is going. Just to switch gears a bit, I do use a streaming service--for films. I finally joined Hulu+ and Netflix streaming this year and it has been a good experience. Hulu+ has most of the Criterion Collection online, which is the manna of my movie watching. Netflix selection still not great but I also use the DVD service. Online streaming has knocked out virtually every rental store. In the end, this is what may happen on the music side.
  17. I have a few of their CDs, and I quite like them, but what has always amazed me has been the assemblage of musical talent they have put together for each album. Just check out the covers that A Lark Ascending has posted for example.
  18. FOUR FOR TRANE FIRE MUSIC LIVE AT DONAUESCHINGEN MUSIC FESTIVAL WITH THE NEW YORK CONTEMPORARY FIVE With Shepp, the earlier the better I think. Downside is that some of that early stuff can be hard to obtain, example BLACK GIPSY on the America (LP) label.
  19. I sort of just noticed that each individual profile comes with a 5 star bar on the profile page. Some have one star or more, some none. Are these like the little stickers that football players get on their helmet from the Coach for a good play, or like military decorations for valor under Internet fire? Either way, I'm sure I am not worthy but I am curious (not like the movie though). What do they stand for and who awards them? Oh yeah, I notice that the Moderators also have their stars on a bar rank shown when they post. Is this the same as the profile stars?
