I found if you can commit to 100 pages a day (or more), the reading experience is better, and the impact of the work is not diffused. Are you reading in original, Dutch or English? Is there an acclaimed Dutch translation? I only know the English ones. I studied Russian for a year in college, and my wife is a native speaker of Russian, but I'm not able to read in the original, alas. I have enough Russian to help me assess phrasing and idiomatic expression for their "Russian-ess." Various translations evoke some hot partisanship; they all have pluses and minuses. I prefer Rosemary Edmonds 2nd translation, in the one volume Penguin edition, if for no other reason that it is a convenient edition to hold and read. Plus I think her translation best splits the difference between English and Russian prose styles. I've been mulling over an attempt at "Clarissa," reputedly the longest novel in English. Not sure I have the stamina anymore I suppose the 100 page a day program would get me there eventually. I still have to read this one. I don't recall Spark dealing with Jewish identity in any of her novels after "Mandelbaum Gate." Did she? I think there must be at least passing references, although I can't come up with any at the moment. If so, I find that discontinuity interesting.

I second your recommendations and would add On The Eve and Fathers and Sons as well. Re weight, in my limited experience he is as insightful as Chekhov. Yes, I agree, re: recommendations and Chekov (in fact, that would make for an interesting close comparison). I was thinking his position vis-a-vis Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy.

I also ordered through Amazon/CD Imports. Comes out $2 cheaper, and I like having Amazon oversee the order. I'm sure CD Import has more to sell directly.

OK, I'm in too.

WORLD OF OBJECTS - Jeremiah Cymerman (cl, elec), Nate Wooley (tp), Evan Parker (ts, ss). 5049 Records CD. I received my pre-order copy today and gave it a spin. I think it's fair to say you will likely either love it or hate it. I love it. Parker, Wooley and Cymerman play with rapt intensity and even a certain fury. But this isn't a latter-day version of "Chirps" or "Three Blokes." Well, maybe it is, but presented in a high-voltage electronic ambience engineered by Cymerman, who is both a marvelous clarinetist and also a highly experienced sound technician. The three players for the most part float in, or emerge from, a thick, pulsing electronic sonic field. This is music for the USS Enterprise crashing through the wormhole, or the director's cut of "2001: A Space Odyssey." There are some moments that approach the usual acoustic environment (recorded at The Stone but you would probably not guess that from the disc alone), some moments of recuperation and equipoise, then one is plunged back into the maelstrom. Heady stuff --if you like it.

Ever have to get a restraining order on someone

Another way to do it is to have a voice mail system or account put on your phone, especially one that allows you to monitor the call as it is in progress. Let all calls go to voice mail. If your harasser speaks during the VM, you will have evidence. The VM will also log the caller's number. If it is someone else calling, you can just pick up the phone or call back. The thing is not to answer the phone directly. -
To date I've only read Fathers and Children, though I have read A Month in the Country (a play) as well. I can recommend Rudin and Sportsman's Sketches. Turgenev probably has the best style of any of the Russian writers of the period, which does make him eminently readable, as Mr Litweiler points out--it does for me. However, as for weight, that might be a different argument.

Netflix - Lack of Quality Selections?
Leeway replied to Tom 1960's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'm a Hulu Plus fan, mainly because of their nearly complete run of Criterion Collection films, which constitute nearly all of my film watching. Hulu also has a pretty impressive catalog of TV series, although that appeals more to my son than to me. I gave up on Netflix streaming, which seems to be mostly B and C films. I keep a basic Netflix DVD account for titles that are not yet in streaming mode. -

That sounds intriguing; I've never heard it. I see it's on Spotify under Basso Continuo. Yes, that's right; in fact, that's what I usually call the album, since Nididhyasana does not trip off my tongue. I notice that the new album runs somewhat along the same lines: sax, trumpet and bass (but only one). I'll want to check that out.

Gauci's "Nididhyasana" with Nate Wooley (tp) and Mike Bisio and Ingebrigt Haaker Flaten, both on bass. is a monster album (Clean Feed). About as intense an experience as you can have with a silver disc. Should be better known but that title has to be a stumbling block.

I like "The Loved One" too but I feel it is sort of a distant thunder to the early, fierce satires. Turgenev wasn't too enthused about Dostoyevsky's pan-Slavic, Russian Orthodox mysticism/nationalism, so was a natural target for Dostoyevsky. But Turgenev's own talent could not be denied, even by his critics, and he remained an important figure and influence to Dostoyevsky, as well as Tolstoy. (Plus he was a very decent person). The relation between the latter two though is quite interesting. I think there was much circling but no coming to grips.

What?! Where??? Look up the listing @ The Stone for Wednesday 9/10. The great pianist is listed on piano as an introduction to each set. One has to think he will join the two bands as well. I be there by 7:00 for a front row seat. It might go without saying that I've never seen him before. I'm not not sure I remember a visit from him to NYC in my time following the music. Sorry, I just saw these posts. Van Hove was supposed to do a short East Coast tour back in 2012. One stop was An Die Musik, on Nov 3, 2012; a duo session with Lou Grassi. Something happened--I can't remember what- and Van Hove had to cancel the Baltimore date. I'm not sure if he actually did perform anywhere else (I've heard conflicting accounts). Fast forward to September 2104 and Van Hove is again scheduled to play with Grassi, as well as Evan Parker. Grassi and Van Hove have some dates in Brooklyn.
