Okay, it kind of makes sense now -- kind of. I have never used the Active Topic or Unread Post function so I didn't know that.

Don't mean to be a smartass (well maybe I do ), but if a person doesn't want to look at the Political Forum, why does a person open it up? I mean, if I don't like something I read, I just don't open it again. Am I missing something?

I've been listening a lot of Bud Powell's Blue Note work lately, and it is a fascinating journey. It's like one of those arcade games where there are many twist and turns, with surprising things appearing from unlikely places. I've read many time from critics that Glass Enclosure is the highlight of these recordings, and not only a highlight, but a look into the soul of Powell's, a self-portrait. That might be true for some but I disagree. That's not to say that "Glass Enclosure" isn't a great work of art: it is. However, as I listen to these recordings, I find that Parisian Thoroughfare is becoming more and more, the Bud Powell recording. Why do I say that? Here are a couple of reasons. It contains great joy. Now joy and Bud Powell are not two words that you hear together too often! But when I listen to his music, I hear a great joy that comes out in much of his playing, and it cause me to laugh with joy sometimes. In the face of so much suffering that occured in Powell's life, he was still able to allow his music to have joy. He wrote it: There are times when I feel just how great of a composer Powell was gets overlooked, and the melodrama take center stage. The fact is that Powell wrote great songs that still get overlooked. It's an incomplete take: I find deep poingnancy in the fact that Parisian Thoroughfare an incomplete take. It just seems to sum up the mixed up, crazy, difficult life that was Powell's. Here he is, doing fantastic work on this song, and yet, something goes off kilter, and it winds up not a whole. Like Powell's life -- fantastic talent, and yet, stuff is always happening to mess it up. Kind of like real life in this world of ours. Bud Powell music just touches me on so many levels it scary at times, but, after all, he is The Amazing Bud Powell!

Yeah, just joking -- On the serious side, I always thought that the reason that Powell recorded this one so often was as a tribute to his brother. For some reason, I always wonder what is going through Powell's mind when he plays it.

I wonder if Bud Powell ever recorded that?

Yeah, the out of sync stuff is bad but this is a "Blue Note" release, since when does quality production count at BN? Bobby Hutcherson was the highlight for me, he is a great musician that never gets the props he should. Jimmy Smith was outstanding -- it's the first time I've ever seen him play. The funniest moment occured at the end of Recorda Me, when Ron Carter had to tell Freddie Hubbard to get up and play the closing -- poor Freddie wasn't paying attention. Am I the only one who thought that Hubbard might have been "under the influence'? Why they ended with Taylor pounding out Pontos Cantados is beyond me. Was that how the concert ended? Overall, it is a great DVD to have, a lot of the players have left us, so it's great to have a record of them. I just can't believe Tony Williams is gone, I still don't believe it. Hope Blue Note puts out some more stuff.

Actually, there is an "official" Jimmy Smith website that is being constructed by the Smith family. Looked for it through a google search but couldn't find the site. It's very crappy right now, hopefully it will be built up in the coming months. I would give a link but I'm away from my computer for ten more days (on vacation ). If I remember, I'll post it when I get back home.

I'm becoming interested in getting the early Blue Note swing artists Mosaic sets, e.g., Art Hodes, Bechet, etc. Just wondering how the sound is on these and if the music is worth spending the $$$ on.

Soular Energy is really a great sounding lp. Gene harris is in great form, and Brown's bass comes through loud and clear! The only drawback is the price, $50.00 is a lot to pay for a lp that is easily bought for $15.00 in cd format.

Great thing about the NBA: No one takes November - December games too seriously. But the Mav did look bad. A team made for the regular season, not the playoffs. 55 wins, out in the second round.

Lakers didn't look too bad last night. The Mavs looked terrible, I mean, does anyone on that team hit the boards for a rebound? Just don't see have they will be a top four team come playoff time. Actually, the Lakers might work better without Kobe than with. Seeing Payton push the ball upcort hard was great. Someting the Lakers haven't done in a looooong time. The problem is this: How are Payton and Kobe going to play with only one ball. I don't see it working out with those two at all. Loved when Kobe came out, sat next to Shaq, and Shaq was like: "There's nothing next to me but empty sapce." Shaq didn't even turn his head to acknowledge Kobe's existence. This thing between them isn't over by a longshot. It's going to be an interesting year in La La Land.
