  1. Here's one of mine for Clark Terry's birthday:
  2. I love that there are a few photos of Sonny Clark included. Here's Monk:
  3. I agree with Chris. In the vast majority of cases, the alternate and unissued takes should have been left on the shelf. In a related matter, some projects like Mingus' Epitaph, should have been left in the trunk.
  4. Steve Lacy Interviews
  5. Monk's Rules by Steve Lacy
  6. No, it all comes from Kodak pollution. The worst in the state. "A total of 13 area schools rank at the top of USA Today's worst air list. All are in fairly close proximity to Kodak's giant manufacturing complex on both sides of Genesee River." Here's a example: John Marshall Hs 180 Ridgeway Avenue Rochester, NY 1st percentile National Rank The air is worse at 35 schools across the nation Chemicals most responsible for the toxicity outside this school: Sulfuric acid 71% of overall toxicity Chlorine 16% of overall toxicity Hydrochloric acid 6% of overall toxicity Chromium and chromium compounds 5% of overall toxicity Hydrogen fluoride 1% of overall toxicity Polluters most responsible for toxics outside this school: Eastman Kodak Co Kodak Park Arch Chemicals Inc Delphi Energy & Chassis Rochester Russell Station (local utility company coal burning plant) Pfaudler, Inc. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ School 41-Kodak Park 279 West Ridge Road Rochester, NY 1st percentile National Rank The air is worse at 35 schools across the nation Sacred Heart Cathedral School 311 Flower City Park Rochester, NY 1st percentile National Rank The air is worse at 245 schools across the nation North Baptist Christian School 2052 Saint Paul Street Rochester, NY 1st percentile National Rank The air is worse at 265 schools across the nation
  7. I believe the others that are worse are here in the Rochester ( or rather the Kodak Park area of the city), and there is very good pizza here too!
  8. I used to hear Steve Kujala many years ago when he was still a student at Eastman. Really wonderful even then! He played tenor too but the flute is his instrument. When I think of jazz flute I always hear Frank Wess in my head ( not Herbie Mann for some reason), and Lew Tabackin is fine too. Sam Rivers has a voice on the flute too.
  9. A interesting find on Flickr: Louis Hayes on Drums, Freddie Hubbard - Trumpet, Joe Henderson - Sax - Kenny Barron - Piano and that's Herbie Louis on Bass. The year was 1967, the place was The Crawford Grill This group of ascended masters played from November 20th thru Saturday the 25th with two matinees (Fri. and Sat.)
  10. Anybody who plays the conch shells. Or steel drums! Larry, I love the "hotel tenor" description and I agree about Harry Allen.
  11. Danny would love you Chewy. Maybe you should make a pilgramge to Cortland, N.Y.
  12. I saw Black Sabbath on what must have been their first club tour in the States. They were big in my town at the time. The same club had Miles's band with Keith in it around the same time. Miles, as a friend said at the time, sounded like he was farting through his horn all week.
  13. Bernie Glow, Hal Posey, Al Forte, and Willie Thomas were part of one of the all time great Woody Herman trumpet sections. Mr. Glow is especially well known on many sessions. Danny Stiles, is on many NYC based recordings. Same with Wayne Andre' who played with Thad and Mel and is on many CTI recordings. Jimmy Campbell played with Woody, Kenton amd Maynard (Ithink) and eded his days in Vegas. Jack Six played with Brubeck ( now again) and Goodman. Joe Romano, who just passed away last week, played with Mangione, Buddy, Woody, Sam Noto and lots of others over the years. Chewy, I could go on and on but you really should know Bill Potts, Eddie Costa, Marty Flax, Don Lanphere and Al Cohn, of course.
  14. No, but..."The King (the nickname given to him by Ben Webster)"
  15. Danny Stiles Bernie Glow and Dick Perry

  17. Because they have a 20th Century mindset.
  18. That was truly bizzare. Everybody looked high. Thanks.
  19. If they wanted to set up a system to produce on demand they could, but then again, this is one of the reasons they are going out of business.
  20. They will soon enough. And that will be that!
  21. This was on LP. I have it. Impulse - 1978 The playing is very good, but Sonny is off mike from time to time.
  22. Yes, keep posting.
  23. Yeah, I was notified yesterday, Peter. Lot of great nights with Joe "Cheese"! The last time I saw him was a couple of years ago and a month or so I was told he came back to Rochester to spend his last days, but I didn't get around to visit him to pay my respects. He knew I dug him though! The last person around that has that "Upstate Sound" on tenor is Pat LaBarbera.
  24. That looks a bit like Arthur Taylor on drums. Thanks for the photos.
  25. That's two bassists and Oscar doubles on cello. I'm guessing Osie Johnson on drums and Bill Crow on bass. I can see Art Farmer too. Never saw this one before. Edit: I found this, but there is a Birdland broadcast in 1956: The Oscar Pettiford Orchestra : Ray Copeland, Art Farmer (-2); Kenny Dorham, tp (-1); Al Grey, tb; Julius Watkins, David Amram, Fr-hrn; Jerome Richardson, fl, Ts; Gigi Gryce, as; arr; Benny Golson, ts, arr; Sahib Shihab, bs; Dick Katz, p; Oscar Pettiford, b, cello; Whitey Mitchell, b; Gus Johnson, d; Betty Glamann, harp. New York, August 23, 1957 Edit #2: "The photo was made by Bill Spilka. It does of course not show the personnel of 570526, but one of Oscar's Birdland bands. Mitsuo Johfu identified Art Farmer tp, Jimmy Cleveland tb, Whitey Mitchell b, Osie Johnson d. In addition to that I believe I recognize Jerome Richardson and J. R. Monterose ts, Idrees Sulieman tp, Dick Katz p, Betty Glamann harp. Here is another photo - backstage. - In his book "Vibrations" David Amram recalls the last tour of this unique band." OP link
