  1. Happy Birthday, Mike!
  2. I read in Earl Palmer's book that Palmer dubbed that solo for the movie. That is he transcribed it and recorded the solo for the soundtrack. Elvin was/is everybody's hero, Onetime I saw him in Toronto with a group that included Sonny Fortune and Ravi Coltrane, with Pat LaBarbera sitting in on every set. Pat lives in Toronto, and of course played with Elvin for many years Between sets I was talking to Pat who I know, and Elvin came up and after introductions and the big bear hug, Pat told him I was from Rochester. Elvin looked at me, smiled and said; "I used to know a hip dentist in Rochester, ha, ha, ha!" I got his drift. Here's on of my photos from 1976:
  3. Chewy, should I tell you how I found SEALED COPY OF "TRUE BLUE" in a dusty old store in Miami in 1981?
  4. I believe that Palmetto has only three releases scheduled for this year, and this is the first.
  5. I took this photo backstage, of Kenny Washington last Tuesday at Dizzy's:
  6. Gerry was one of the sweetest men you could ever meet. Everyone loved him.
  7. Bumping this up for this week:
  8. Pandora is so s l o w to add new music submissions! I sent them music months ago to add. They do add another dimension to listening to music that I think is worthwhile, though.
  9. Free, it not that Kenny Washington. This Kenny Washington is from the Bay Area and is really a extraordinary singer. He's really a musician. The best male singer around, bar none. I shit you not. He's only about 4' 11" tall, but when he sings, he's the Matterhorn! Keezer has a concert in Miami on Sunday, so Robert Rodriguez, who's in Joe's regular touring group, will play. Another great player. It really a "Rolls Royce" group!
  10. Next week at Dizzy's I'll be there for a few days if anyone wants to meet...
  11. Pretty sure the American Quartet (Quintet, actually, Guillermo Franco had been added by then) did a show for NPR, or one that aired on our NPR station. Has that ever been made available commercially? I have a tape of that. No percussionist I believe. It's very good and I transferred it to cdr. I sent it to Frank Kimbrough, who has a vast collection of Jarrett.
  12. It doesn't surprise me what I hear in a store or restaurant these days because they all subscribe to MUZAK or another service that has many channels that they steam, including a variety of jazz channels. So it's that you just got lucky, not that you came upon some underground hip store manager.
  13. I don't hear that at all. Jarrett is a highly melodic improviser.
  14. In a conversation with a friend/musician who was taking leave of a project that Mr. Schuller was directing because of stress from too many projects, Schuller told him he knew exactly what he was talking about and told of a time in his life when he literally work himself into exhaustion. I say this not to infer that Schuller is delicate and somehow prone to collapse, but to indicate that he is a intensely dedicated musician/author and conceptualist who knows his limits and has high standards.
  15. It's a old retailer's trick: raise the prices 20% and then give 20% off.

    Nina Simone

That's it! Summertime is a instrumental and a vocal track, by the way... You Can Have Him and Wild is the Wind are so good it's scary!

    Nina Simone

I have a Collectables disc with both of those issues on there, and I also have the Town Hall LP that I cherish.
  18. I always thought they were Father and Son. Here's Victor from 1978:
  19. Only George Martin knew if that's really Ringo, although I believe he's a fine entertainer.
  20. Well both played together in the Clarke - Boland Big band for a while, right?
  21. Chuck would happier if you bought "Have No Fear" and you would be too!
  22. A much better cover...
  23. Savoy Session 1947, L to R: Trummy Young, Teddy Reig, Dexter Gordon Person seated in the background has yet to be identified.
