  1. I have a couple photos in the "Philly" issue of last month. Not this one, though:
  2. by any chance, was that guy fenton hollander? Nope, but I found the information, for what it's worth: Frank Vardaros Talent Buyer For Bookings and Public Relations 305.394.8266 1209 Saxon Blvd, Suite 7, Orange City, FL 32763
  3. Right, Dan. It was book by a guy ( whose name I can't remember) who was based in Boston, if I remember right. Jazz is a tough business proposition.

You and everyone else, it seems. Especially record producers. But he prefers himself on tenor. I'm starting to realize why Fats Waller was frustrated over how no one took his organ playing seriously...................... He used to be in Philly Joe Jones' band, that I used to go hear quite a lot back in the late '70's or so. He was always on tenor.

I have this one: It's nice.
  6. I almost bought the Armstrong book last week. Tommy Smith could had had a career as a painter. He painted many of his cd covers:
  7. It was first issued in mono.
  8. I'm sorry, but a think you're stretching the term "funky" just a little bit...
  9. Happy Birthday Plunger Face!
  10. Xanadu
  11. Leonard Feather, possibly? Here's another of the Mystery Man with Ron Carter:
  12. This is from the same collection, Valerie: I taped the whole thing as the day went on (over the radio), now there are bit torrents of the music around.
  13. Here's another series of Facebook photos, this time put up by Lee Mergner of Jazz Times: These are from the jazz at the White House party given by Carter. From the photo files of JazzTimes. These photos were taken by Karl Esch, who was hired by Ira Sabin, the founder of JazzTimes. He has labeled this one Ralph Gleason, but it can't be since he died in 1975. Any guesses: Roy Eldridge, Doc Cheatham and Zoot Sims Jimmy Carter and Cecil Taylor
  14. i second that assessment, Marcello!! i just saw her last month and she's working on her dissertation. amazing woman! and continues to be the biggest supporter of jazz. I'm sorry I missed her at Dizzy's when she stopped by with Kareem to see Joe Locke with the Trio da Paz in August.
  15. I don't believe that Woody and Maxine were "married" in the legal sense. I could be, and often am, wrong. Here's a photo of mine of the Maxine and Woody from 1978 or so: I'm in contact with her from time to time these days. She's a fine and intelligent lady.
  16. Another thing that's interesting is that Woody is playing with Maxine Gregg's ex-husband.
  17. These are from Rafi D'Lugoff, who has been posting mementos on his "Remembering The Village Gate" Facebook page: Nina Simone in Fire Island
  18. A Big Happy Birthday for Big Al!
  19. On this last Thursday, I spent some time with Aaron Goldberg and his trio ( Reuben Rogers - bass, and Ali Jackson - drums), while they did in a day in town doing workshops at Eastman, gave a discussion with non - music students at the University of Rochester and then a two hour concert in the Interfaith Chapel on campus. Great band with intelligent original compositions and a smattering of standards done in their oen way. Reuben Rogers was both a rock and a free spirit throughout the day and night. If you haven't hear Aaron's "Worlds", it's well worth your money.
  20. A very Happy Birthday to you Noj!

I've never heard him play, but isn't his band the one that Carmen McRae toured with early in her career?
