  1. Would you say that the 12-inch, 45 rpm records skip more than 33 rpm, given the same surface condition? Hmm, not sure. I don't think I've noticed any extra problems/vulnerability with the 45rpm pressings compared with 33-1/3 but there again I don't have too may 45s. Nice avatar, Bob!
  2. Thanks to all for your input. Some very good ideas in here. Keep the suggestions coming...
  3. I am getting married in about two months time and it is time for us to choose which tune we will be dancing to at the start of the party. Lynn and I have decided it should be a jazz tune. Yet, I must confess I am a rubbish dancer which makes it quite difficult. We are thinking of going for Anita O'Day 'Ain't in a wondeful day' (Mosaic set disc 1 track 10) which is a beautiful and joyful tune but very difficult for a crappy dancer. Any suggestions or personal experiences?
  4. and what a great evening of viewing it was. I recorded the lot ! So many highlights - Oscar and Ella at their greatest, Barney Kessel, Joe Pass and the wonderful Mr Ed Thigpen. That 'Jazz 625' was a real discovery (Peterson/Brown/Thigpen, 1964). I watched the four Peterson programmes last night. Great stuff. I especially enjoyed the 625 programme too. The conversation with Andre Previn was well worth staying up. Highly recommended programmes for those of you who recorded them.
  5. A very useful website on which you can find archives of rare LPs auctions.
  6. Same here. Same here. No sign of a message asking me to pay for anything. I only use it occasionally. This is a very useful site.
  7. Thanks! the Bobby Hutcherson 'Oblique' is a crcker.
  8. I have to admit that I am often thrown by a lot of decisions made by BN at the time. A lot of gems didn't get to see the day of light in due time. Also, why is it that a lot of stuff was only released in Japan? I am thinking of the King input here.
  9. Thank you. This one is in my high priority list. I think I have nearly all the Hank BN sessions as a leader on King reissues except that one. Glad it is a good one as I have read mixed reviews about it.
  10. Are these 'Rainbow' series any good, Bob? I have seen the King pressing on Ebay a few times but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I assume the Rainbow usually go for much less.
  11. Thanks Aggie! I forgot the Seven Steps. I have two Seven Steps boxes since somebody got me one two years ago for Xmas thinking I didn't have it. I should sell that one. It is still sealed. I still need to find the Jack Johnson, The Miles & Coltrane and the IASW.
  12. Could somebody complete the list, please? Which Miles sets have been released with a metal spine? Miles & Coltrane; 63-64; 2nd quintet 65-68, Bitches brew, Corner sessions..... Which ones are missing? Is there a version of IASW with a metal spine? I have everything on Mosaic LPs but I like these sets and the booklets.
  13. I strongly recommend the Marciac festival in France that usually takes place in the first two weeks of August. http://www.jazzinmarciac.com/
  14. Seems you had a great time, my main beef with the league, is that most teams play in a conservative way, French teams used to play with flair, not anymore they remind me of Calcio teams style of playing in the 80s sorry Porcy62 You are right about French teams being very cautious especially when playing away. Your comparison with the Italian league in the 80s is spot on. The problem is that French clubs can't compete with richer English, Italian and Spanish clubs and they find very difficult to attract very good strikers. So many French players leave the country every year for financial reasons ( salary and taxes). It is a shame but I can't see things change in the foreseable future. Yet, the level is better than many people think it is and apart from Lyon, the rest of the clubs are of similar quality. In the English or the Italian leagues, the bottom five or six teams are really poor. It's one thing doing to do what you can with what you've got when you face strong european sides, but it does not excuse the poor quality of the domestic league, they all seem to play with the aim of not losing instead of winning. I look at a league like Bundesliga which isn't that stronger than the French Championship and there is a huge difference about the pholosophy of how the game is played. I couldn't agree more. I think the only way for this negative philosophy to disappear would be to see the fans deserting the stadiums. Yet, I can't see this happen.

  16. I was in France for the Christmas period and I managed to get some tickets to see the game Nancy - Lyon. Nancy is my team and I have been supporting them for about 25 years now. Great game that Nancy should have won. Final score was 1-1. I know the French league is weaker than the English, Spanish and Italian leagues but this match played in dreadful weather on a completely frozen pitch was a very good game of football. This is the first time ever that Nancy are doing so well in the league and I was over the moon to see that game against Lyon. For those who know a bit about football, Nancy is the team where Michel Platini started his career before playing for St Etienne and Juventus. We are still second behind Lyon who should win the French league for the seventh time on the trot.
  17. I really like this set and I have been digging it big time lately. The booklet is top class with some very nice photos and good comments. This is a very good set to own in my opinion. Obviously, the fact that I didn't own much Chet Baker music apart from the Mosaic sets made the purchase of this set much easier... I strongly recommend it.
  18. Bestbuy must be thinking that America is the centre of the universe or that other people who don't live there aren't equiped with CD players... They don't ship outside the US! How can any business justify this type of policy? Shame, this set has a few sessions I have only got on vinyl. And because I haven't sorted out a turntable in my car yet, this one would have been handy!
