  1. I grew up in North Brunswick, NJ. Looking Glass (Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)) was from New Brunswick, NJ which is mysteriously north of North Brunswick. Lenny Kaye is from North Brunswick, he was/is in the Patty Smith grp and wrote liner notes for the Nuggets comp. The 1910 Fruit Gum Company was from Jersey too.
  2. Out here in the wildlands of Houston without my collection, I've been bored and needing music and discovered that eMusic works quite well with iTunes, so I joined. Have gotten some Gigi, Laswell, Bartz, Revolutionary Ensemble, and other albums in download, including the fantastic "Love Songs" by Patty Waters and Jessica Williams. Some downloads here sound better than others. . . . The Xanadu Pee Wee Williams I loaded sounds awful. I bet the Woody Shaw "Blackstone Legacy" cd sounds better than the download. But some sound great. Overall I think iTunes music store downloads sound much better, but then they're more than twice as expensive.
  3. K...K...Katy Su...Su...Sudio My baby that they call Patty, but whose real name is Linda Lu.
  4. I like all of Jill Scotts music. I really enjoy her vocals and her instrumental accompaniment. I just had a personal concert of her music along with Erykah Badu and Sade! DAMN! I LOVE THIER MUSIC...!!! I also think Alicia Keys is very talented. I heard on the Mary McPartland show a few months back and she played some of her music and a few Marvin Gaye tunes. I like the fact that she writes her own music and plays the piano. A big plus in my eyes since so many of the current popular music icons are totally musically illeterate, compose no music, cannot sing and cannot play any instruments. I don't consider her the most gifted vocalist (e.g. Sarah Vaughn, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Patty Label, et al) but her ability to compose music, play an instrument and posses enough talent to sing well gives her a big plus in my book.

  6. SF Chronicle - LEAH GARCHIK Wednesday, March 15, 2006 Because Phil Elwood, jazz critic for the Examiner and then The Chronicle, would have been 80 on Sunday, it will be Elwood weekend around here. At 1 p.m. Saturday, Yoshi's in Jack London Square is hosting a free tribute show of jazz artists, including Mike Lipskin, Kim Nalley, John Santos and Richard Hadlock. KPFA, where Elwood began doing a jazz show in 1952, has proclaimed Sunday all his. The Yoshi's show will be broadcast, as well as classic Elwood shows and interviews, and (live) a Sunday night free musical celebration at the Great American Music Hall. This 8 p.m. show will include jazz, rock, blues, folk and more, "the full breadth of Elwood's catholic taste,'' says Joel Selvin, who with Jesse Hamlin has organized it. An altar made by Rebecca Nichols Bivona will include some of Elwood's personal effects, including a letter from (pre-kidnap) Patty Hearst thanking him for getting her tickets to a Monkees concert.
  7. wigwise, I really liked Patty Waters but not sure I 'enjoyed' it! A very emotional set and a quite unique experience. She has to be heard live! As for Parisian jazz activities, there is no dedicated jazz site that can help but you can always check the Figaroscope listings Not complete bit I do not know of any more thorough site.
  8. Went to the second Paris show. It was my first opportunity at seeing and listening to Patty Waters live and am glad I attended this. Henry Grimes and Patty Waters shared the back of the cellar where the show was being performed. Patty Waters looking very frail and wearing a black floorlength gown which made her look like a fragile rescapee from the Peace and Love generation. Grimes took the stage first with one of his long solo that builds on spîrit plus virtuosity with a mix of bowing and plucking. You rarely catch bass solos that last so long (more than half and hour) and yet manage to grab your attention and grab it and on and on.... Also the place was so small that the listener becomes really part of the whole musical performance. You're sitting right next to the musicians. Patty Waters stood in a corner behind Grimes smiling and digging it all the time and when Grimes finished his solo section gently moved to the front and went into one of her tormented vocalizing. From the moment she started to sing, her smiling face turned into a tortured expression that matched her vocalizing. Her repertoire included songs like 'Nature Boy' and 'Black is the Color of My True Love Hair' and her singing was more reminiscent of her two ESP albums than her more recent recordings. Musings that reach deep inside the listener. Wish her two Paris shows had gathered more publicity. The events were not announced in the main media outlets. It was just lucky that both were attended by small enthusiastic audiences. Henry Grimes had a stupendous improvisation in the second set that I wish had been recorded!
  9. .......I'm playing at the Eastern Trombone Workshop on Friday, March 17th, St. Patty's day. It's at Brucker Hall, Ft. Myer, VA at 8:15 PM. I'm doing a concert w/the Army Blues Band, a very good big band. I've written a bunch of new arrangements for this gig, and if any board members are in the vicinity I'd love to meet you.

  12. WHOA!!! Details, please! Yes, this is on the DVD THE BEAT Vol. 4. It's an expensive DVD compiling by Bear Family of many of the shows (maybe all) of the T.V. show THE BEAT, which was broadcast out of Dallas in the mid sixties. Shows include a lot of great stars and the backup band is headed each time by Gatemouth Brown! Freddie's on a lot of the shows and others include Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Joe Simon, Patty LaBelle, Frogman Henry, ect... a who's who of sixties blues and R&B. The best part is local redneck D.J. Hoss Allen who's a hoot and actually is too drunk to announce one of the shows so Otis Redding steps in to M.C.... We have this series for rent here at Waterloo Video (also for sale there) here in Austin. That said, don't think Blockbuster's gonna have this one. Is this the DVD? (I note to my dismay that it won't play over in Britain.) MG yes, that's it... I think there's 6 volumes so far. each has 4 shows on it i believe. Thanks, Soul Station. Now, how to get something that lets me play US DVDs is another bunch of technology I've got to get to grips with. At my age, there are diminishing returns from technology... MG I'm a tech idiot, but I think Bear Family is out of Germany...although I don't know anything beyond that. Thanks for that tip; I see Amazon Germany are flogging it. MG

  21. He was, IMO, one of the best in West Wing's stellar cast.--CA 'West Wing' actor John Spencer dies at 58 Actor John Spencer, from the television series "The West Wing," gives a thumbs up as he arrives for the 59th Annual Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, Calif., in this Jan. 20, 2002, file photo. Spencer, 58, died of a heart attack Friday, Dec. 15, 2005, at a Los Angeles hospital, his publicist Ron Hofmann said. (AP Photo/Kevork Djansezian) By LYNN ELBER AP Television Writer | December 16, 2005 LOS ANGELES --John Spencer, who played a tough and dedicated politico on "The West Wing" who survived a serious illness to run for vice president, died of a heart attack Friday. He was 58. Spencer died after being admitted to a Los Angeles hospital during the night, said his publicist, Ron Hofmann. He would have been 59 on Tuesday. He was "one of those rare combinations of divinely gifted and incredibly generous," said actor Richard Schiff, who played Toby Ziegler on the NBC series. "There are very few personal treasures that you put in your knapsack to carry with you for the rest of your life, and he's one of those," Schiff said. He said Spencer had been struggling with health issues but seemed to have rebounded. Spencer played Leo McGarry, the savvy and powerful chief of staff to President Josiah "Jed" Bartlet (Martin Sheen). In a sad parallel to life, Spencer's character suffered a heart attack that forced him to give up his White House job. McGarry recovered and was picked as a running mate for Democratic presidential contender Matt Santos, played by Jimmy Smits; the campaign against Republican Arnold Vinick (Alan Alda) has been a central theme for the drama this season. "John was an uncommonly good man, an exceptional role model and a brilliant actor," said Aaron Sorkin, who created the series, and Tommy Schlamme, one of the original executive producers, in a joint statement. "We feel privileged to have known him and worked with him. He'll be missed and remembered every day by his many, many friends," they said. Actress Allison Janney, C.J. Cregg on the series, described Spencer as a consummate professional actor. "Everyone adored him," she said. NBC and producer Warner Bros. Television praised Spencer's talent but did not address how his death would affect the Emmy Award-winning series, in production on its seventh season. Spencer, who also starred on "L.A. Law" as attorney Tommy Mullaney, received an Emmy Award for his performance on "The West Wing" in 2002 and was nominated four other times for the series. The actor, whose world-weary countenance was perfect for the role of McGarry, mirrored his character in several ways: Both were recovering alcoholics and both, Spencer once said, were driven. "Like Leo, I've always been a workaholic, too," he told The Associated Press in a 2000 interview. "Through good times and bad, acting has been my escape, my joy, my nourishment. The drug for me, even better than alcohol, was acting." Spencer grew up in Paterson, N.J., the son of blue-collar parents. With his enrollment at the Professional Children's School in Manhattan at age 16, he was sharing classes with the likes of Liza Minnelli and budding violinist Pinchas Zukerman. As a teenager, he landed a recurring role on "The Patty Duke Show" as the boyfriend of English twin Cathy. Stage and film work followed. Then his big break: playing Harrison Ford's detective sidekick in the 1990 courtroom thriller "Presumed Innocent." That role led to his hiring for the final four years of "L.A. Law." Spencer played a streetwise lawyer on the David E. Kelley drama that was in sharp contrast to the show's otherwise glamorous cast and setting. After attending the Manhattan performing arts school, Spencer studied at Fairleigh Dickenson University. He then began working on stage in New York and in regional theaters, in plays including David Mamet's "Lakeboat" and Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie." Spencer won an Obie Award for the 1981 off-Broadway production of "Still Life," about a Vietnam veteran, and received a Drama Desk nomination for "The Day Room." His made his feature film debut with a small role in "War Games," which was followed by roles in "Sea of Love" and "Black Rain." Spencer said his work in "Presumed Innocent" represented a "watershed role." In recent years, he worked both in studio and independent films, including "The Rock," "The Negotiator," "Albino Alligator," "Lesser Prophets" and "Cold Heart." Spencer, an only child, is survived by "cousins, aunts, uncles, and wonderful friends," Hofmann said.
  22. I've always enjoyed his performances, going back to L.A. Law and beyond. He was great on West Wing- they will sorely miss him.
