The album rises somewhat above the hokey concept underlying the album. Lateef did pretty well filling the role of the "exotic" jazz player (shaved head, then-exotic name, the association with "Eastern" music, etc). Nevertheless, he did make some nice albums.

Four aspects of Sam Rivers' artistry. On Vol. One, Side A, Sam plays soprano sax, Side B, tenor sax. On Vol. 2, Side A, Sam plays flute, Side B, piano. Improvising Artists LPs. NYC 1976. Brilliant performances from Sam and Dave Holland:

The first few minutes of this record always crack me up as the members of the band engage is a bit of good-natured "repartee." I never get tired of Jackie's playing.

Charles Mingus--A Modern Jazz Symposium of Music and Poetry (Bethleham).

1957 Mingus is just incredible--the base group of Mingus, Richmond, Jimmy Knepper, and Shafi Hadi is one of my favorites.

Charles Mingus--Wonderland (United Artists, disembodied Mingus head pressing). I noticed that there is a an ear or P in the inner groove, just like a Blue Note pressing.

Gordon Beck Plus Two 'Dr Doolittle Loves Jazz' (Major Minor, mono). This was producer Ray Horrick's old copy. Nice that he did the sleeve notes too.

Also a Michael Garrick obscurity from 1965. 'Anthem' (UK Argo EP, mono)

And a nice 1955 EP from Joe Harriott. 'Joe Harriott Quartet' (UK Columbia EP, mono)
