Two Jims and Zoot- Fontana (mono)- gentle - perhaps too much bossa but a decent album if not one for the desert island

For your delectition, just happened to come across Charles Fox's Gramophone Magazine review of this one..

Review

What was the original US release label - was it Mainstream?

Fair review, pretty much reflects my feelings too. Yes it's a Mainstream recording.

Funny, I've always liked this album a lot.

Gerry Mulligan - Song Book, Vol.1 (World Pacific Records)

That wonderful saxophone band! :tup

Hmmmm. I always felt Freddie Green was the odd man out on this date. It just didn't feel "settled" to me.

also, Alan Eager had lost a lot. Unless I'm thinking of a different recording.

Agree with you about Allen Eager at this date (1957), but like Freddie Greene's contribution - makes the pianoless rhythm section meatier.

decent transfers on this LP - Billy Banks & his Rhythm Makers (CBS)- hot jazz but vocals not helpful. Banks is ok but occasionally gets in the way. The high point of Eddie Condon's career?

next up the June 1924 Gennett solos by Mr Jelly Lord on Ferd " Jelly Roll" Morton (Fountain FJ 104) - decent transfers by John RTD. Recent purchase and my first exposure to these tracks.

David Eyges - Crossroads (Music Unlimited), with Byard Lancaster and Sunny Murray. Until looking for a picture of the cover online, I had no idea that this album had been reissued on CD, with a couple of extra tracks.

I remember the Mary Lou Webb, warped pressings issue. I finally got a copy from Cecil. All the best, young man.
