Kid Thomas - Sonnets From Algiers (Icon mono). I couldn't find an online picture of the original Icon issue, but this early Jazzology reissue is close - the Icon is black instead of blue. Two of my favorite new Orleans reedmen are on board - Paul Barnes on clarinet & Emanuel Paul on tenor sax.

The Giuseppi Logan Quartet (ESP mono)

I was moved to play this - first time in over 40 years (bought it when it came out in 1965) - after reading the article on Giuseppi Logan in The New York Times on Sunday. I didn't expect much, since this record had never spoken to me before. For some reason, when I listened today, the music spoke to me in a strange way. It was as if I was able to enter into the peaceful wildness of it. Weird that after all this time I found a way into Giuseppi Logan's music - at least for today.

I love this post.

Just finished:

Jimmy Smith - Open House (BN Liberty stereo). Casual, all too easy, just another jam session - but still just incredibly beautiful.

Johnny Hodges/Wild Bill Davis - Wings & Things (Verve stereo). Oddly enough, Davis does not even appear on three of the eight cuts. Hank Jones plays piano on those tracks, so I'm not complaining.

Restless, unsettled, and in need of musical comfort food. So:

Dave Brubeck - Gone With the Wind (Columbia 6-eye stereo).

Duke Ellington - Ellington Indigos (Columbia 70's stereo pressing)

Sam Musiker - Jewish Wedding Dances (Tikva mono). Wish I could find a picture of this wonderful cover - the second pressing of this great klezmer album from the 1950's. I found some pictures of the first cover, which is much less interesting.

Taft Jordan Plays Duke Ellington: Mood Indigo!!! (Prestige/Moodsville/Status mono). Just finished spinning a wonderful album I was not even aware of until a couple of hours ago, when I found it in an Atlanta record store. Jordan plays Ellington with Kenny Burrell, Richard Wyands, Joe Benjamin, and Charlie Persip - very nice. My copy is a typical Prestige hybrid - Status labels and a Moodsville cover.

The CD version (heresy here on the vinyl thread?) adds a second recording - The Swingville All-Stars - with Taft Jordan, Hilton Jefferson, Al Sears, Don Abney, Wendell Marshall, and Gus Johnson - a nice addition. I remember that Joe hipped me to this, perhaps back on the old BN Board, when I was looking to hear more Hilton Jefferson.

I'm sure I must have known about this, but never heard any of it. Must get it. Is the CD actually listed as by 'The Swingville All-Stars' or by one of the participants?
