God, did early digital recordings sound like shit.

Not that this is particularly good music, but still...

Never thought I'd see Patsy Kensit on this board ! She was fit back then though.. :excited:

If I remember right, this film co-incided with an absolute flood of French DMM Blue Notes, so that we all thought we'd gone to heaven.

I've always loved this album, and haven't heard it in ages, but I was not prepared for the slamming sound quality that came pouring out of my speakers. This is one of the best sounding "non-acoustic" lps in my collection.

The Beatles - Rubber Soul (UK 2 box pressing). I'm practically melting as I type this. Tubes suck when it's 95 and you don't have A/C.

Edit to add: Tubes suck when it's 95 out and you have a laptop on your actual lap and no A/C. :):)

Don DeMicheal was one of my best friends. I met him in 1964/5 - not sure. We became fast friends over the years and I miss him every day of my life. I think he was the best editor Down Beat ever had.

I love his work on this album and I'm glad you were his friend. That's a great album, sounds just how I like albums to sound too. I would have loved to have met all three of those guys at that time and beyond.

Mingus in Europe Volume II (Enja)

There's an extra cut on the cd of this album and I keep wondering if I should pick up the cd for one track. I know it's Mingus and Dolphy and that should be enough to warrant it, but...

How did you find out what was going to be released and when, back then. Did you have to rely on relationships with record store owners?

Yes. In '69 and early '70 I worked in a record shop - so that was easy. Later, I developed relationships with shop owners. The ones who'd let me know what was going down were the people who ran the best shops anyway.

It was a matter of some difficulty when my wife started giving birth in the middle of the night before Grant Green's 'Shades of Green' was coming out. But, despite no sleep, I made it to the shop :bwallace:

Recorded at United Sound in Detroit, arranged by David Van De Pitte, with Earl Van Dyke on piano for good measure.

I got to meet Denise LaSalle once in a social setting. Her personality on record and in-person were pretty much one and the same. She's lively!

Used to have one of those. First, though, I had this:

You won't approve of this Sidewinder, but in a programme of progressive replacement, I've ended up with a CD that looks like this:

Oh my, talk about a surprise! Don Sebesky is in full early orchestral flower here, and Sheldon can play anything and put some musicality in it...take these performances, record them at RVG w/Creed Taylor providing the direction sonially, and you'd have something like White Rabbit or Sky Dive. Almost, anyway.

I know that's a big turnoff for many, but hey, I like to hear what people can do with projects like this, what angle they decide to take, do they decide to play it safe, or do they go ahead and do stuff that they wouldn't have to do, just because? On this album, they go for it, and it works quite well. It's still easy-listening, make no mistake, but somewhat....expansive easy listening.

Stopped at a record store this evening and walked out with half a dozen new slabs of vinyl. Just played:

George Cables - Cables Vision (Contemporary). This one got me thinking about Max Harrison's dictum that all music is dated - that it all reflects the period in which it was created. This is a good album, but parts of it are somewhat dated in a negative way.

Bill Barron - Variations in Blue (Muse). This one seems timeless.
