jeffcrom Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 Max Roach - Chattahoochee Red (Columbia). Never on CD, as far as I know. I usually spin this one every year on MLK day; the first track mixes excerpts from Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech with Roach's drums. It's kind of magical, and the rest of the album is equally excellent. Quote

Leeway Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 Hugh Ragin - METAPHYSICAL QUESTION - with John Lindberg, Thurman Barker. CECMA LP. I bet that's a good listen? It is, although not a grab you by the lapels album. I think Side 2 is the stronger. I've listened to this several times now, and like it more each time. There is that sense of higher artistic aims about it. Quote

You feel side two is even stronger - definitely added to the 'wants list' Quote
Leeway Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 Savoy Jazz LP reissue of the original Savoy issue (as "The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra"). Besides some excellent music by Sun Ra and the Arkestra, this is a really good sounding LP (produced by Tom Wilson). Surprisingly ( to me anyway), the reissue carries liner notes by Milo Fine. Quote
colinmce Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 Earlier: Henry Threadgill Sextett - Rag, Bush & All (Novus) Warne Marsh - The Art of Improvising (Revelation) Tyrone Washington - Natural Essence (BN Liberty) Still not totally sold on the last one. A bit stiff to my ears. I suppose I'm in the minority there... Quote
clifford_thornton Posted January 22, 2014 Report Posted January 22, 2014 I have it but it doesn't get a lot of mileage for me either. Who knows though - a decade or two down the line, my opinion & interest could change. Quote
