B. Clugston Posted September 18, 2014 Report Posted September 18, 2014 Karl Berger & Edward Blackwell: Just Play (Quark) Good idea. I'm going to spin this next. Great record. Quote
JohnS Posted September 18, 2014 Report Posted September 18, 2014 I have a Japanese Toshiba LP pressing of The Golden Eight. Excellent album. Need to dig it out again. (been a while since I was on a CBBB kick, though when it's a kick, it's heavy...) Same here, not played in years. I'll have to dig it out. Quote
Daniel A Posted September 18, 2014 Report Posted September 18, 2014 George Russell Sextet in K.C. (Decca). Actually they are in New York. Nice session with Dave Baker, Don Ellis and Dave Young. I really like Baker's playing on "Jazz in the Space Age" but have not heard anything else. Recommendations? Quote
colinmce Posted September 18, 2014 Report Posted September 18, 2014 Any of the great George Russell Riverside LPs of the early 60s: Ezzthetics, Stratus Seekers, Stratusphunk. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 19, 2014 Report Posted September 19, 2014 and if you want to hear him on cello, Charles Tyler's Eastern Man Alone (ESP). Now: Kenny Wheeler - Windmill Tilter - (Fontana UK) Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted September 19, 2014 Report Posted September 19, 2014 Kenny Wheeler "windmill tilter" (Fontana, UK). This is not my favorite Wheeler record, but it's his first as a leader and sets the tone for great things to come from him. Quote
sidewinder Posted September 19, 2014 Report Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) My copy of 'Windmill Tilter' is coming out later on. As is 'Music For Large and Small Ensembles' (ECM 2LP) and the Incus LP. Edited September 19, 2014 by sidewinder Quote

George Russell Sextet 'Ezz-thetics' (Riverside) would be my immediate recommendation for great playing by Baker, particularly on the title track. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted September 19, 2014 Report Posted September 19, 2014 Kenny Wheeler "windmill tilter" (Fontana, UK). This is not my favorite Wheeler record, but it's his first as a leader and sets the tone for great things to come from him. It's maybe not the "best" one but it's really, really good and I play it fairly often. Underrated IMO. Quote

This is not my favorite Wheeler record, but it's his first as a leader and sets the tone for great things to come from him. It's maybe not the "best" one but it's really, really good and I play it fairly often. Underrated IMO. True..didn't mean to come across as saying it wasn't good...it is a great album and often I forget that John McLaughlin is on it which is pretty cool! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 19, 2014 Report Posted September 19, 2014 yeah, side two gets particularly heavy ! Quote
B. Clugston Posted September 19, 2014 Report Posted September 19, 2014 George Russell Sextet in K.C. (Decca). Actually they are in New York. Nice session with Dave Baker, Don Ellis and Dave Young. I really like Baker's playing on "Jazz in the Space Age" but have not heard anything else. Recommendations? My favourite record featuring Baker is George Russell Sextet at "The Five Spot," which, in a continuing theme from Russell's time at Decca, wasn't recorded where the title said it was. Great album, but the other Russells featuring Baker are all very good. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 19, 2014 Report Posted September 19, 2014 The Deccas are all superb. Quote

Homefromtheforest Posted September 20, 2014 Report Posted September 20, 2014 Steve Lacy "spiritual moments" (paddlewheel, Japan). Love this album...for some reason his Japanese LPs resonate deeply with me but then again it's no coincidence I have a ton of Masahiko Togashi albums as well... Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 20, 2014 Report Posted September 20, 2014 Spiritual Moments is a wonderful record. Quote
