Clunky Posted April 10, 2016 Report Posted April 10, 2016 First spin this sunday morning Frederick Roach ----All that's good-------(Blue Note) NYC stereo deep groove about 6 six years ago picked this and Mo Greens please in mint condition. Both were immaculate NYC stereo copies with ear, etc. Covers really looked split new. The voices on this album work pretty well , giving a real gospel edge to the playing. Roach seems at his most adventurous. I'm no musician but I quite like Roach's ambition in his playing on his own BN dates. He's less impressive and sounds more 'rinky dink' on Ike Quebec's late BNs. Next a NYC stereo which is in more obviously used condition but still sounds very nice Horace Silver-----The Tokyo Blues-----(BN NYC stereo ear) Quote

Royal Oak Posted April 10, 2016 Report Posted April 10, 2016 I bought the Sheila Jordan album (on CD) about 20 years ago on the 4 star recommendation of Cook and Morton. Didn't really do it for me. Quote

Homefromtheforest Posted April 11, 2016 Report Posted April 11, 2016 Dropped $1400 Canadian today at my retired friend's house; continuing my dig through his collection. That got me 21 albums but it included J.R.Monterose on Lexington Blue Note, a black label "giant steps", and many more New Jazz, Riverside, and Blue Notes all in excellent condition. First spins from the pile tonight are: Julius Wechter 4tet "linear sketches" (jazz west, DG USA) Bennie Green "soul stirrin" (Blue Note, 47w63rd no "r" mono) Tubby Hayes "return visit" (Fontana, UK) Art Blakey jazz messengers "live at cafe Bohemia vol.1" (blue note, Lexington USA) Quote

Clunky Posted April 11, 2016 Report Posted April 11, 2016 Woody Herman Sextet--------s/t-----------(WRC) UK budget edition of Roulette session (At the Roundtable) Really good all-star line up. Nat Adderley, Charlie Byrd, Eddie Costa (piano and vibes) Jimmy Campbell (drums). Not your average Herman session. Don't get me wrong it's not some amazing gem but it is pretty nice. Poor cover, although the Roulette original is odd to say the least . for completeness here's the Roulette Quote

Have not played my copy in around 15 years. Bought it around the same time that I got "whirled music" and the Alterations album on Bead. All sort of in the same bag if memory serves. The David Lee album is a good score!! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 12, 2016 Report Posted April 12, 2016 yeah, they are all pretty similar and enjoyable in their own weird way. Got Whirled Music, the Alterations on Bead, Choloagogues and a few others of this persuasion. The Lee is a nice palette-cleanser after all that weirdness! Now: Oliver Lake - Passing Thru - (Africa Pub., FR orig?) Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted April 12, 2016 Report Posted April 12, 2016 Ah yes the "choloagogues"(spelling?) is in the racks too...have not played these records in a long time! Quote
