Pretty sure he had a pretty good life doing session work of all sorts, on that one Thad/Mel album, played on "The second race" iirc, not at all phased by all that gloriously goofy mess that Thad threw at him. A lesson in survival, in its own way, not a great solo, but then again, he didn't back down or away, he just played with the band. And he got paid for the night. Survival. Another kind of survival, this time on Encounter Records (a very small but most uber-coll output of a label) from the early 70s, produced by Lloyd Price: Because, Eddie Harris couldn't make all the Eddie Harris records, could he now! But I like that shit, because, yes, derivative, intentionally so, but insincer, phony, fake, whatever, etc? Not as I hear it, again, not phased, just play the gig, play with the band, get paid, living being made, fair enough, imo. Quote

In fact, they're not that far removed from how he played on some tracks from his Roost albums. Quote
jeffcrom Posted September 23, 2017 Report Posted September 23, 2017 Dewey Redman - Coincide (Impulse). Hard-core, even for Impulse. And really good. Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted September 23, 2017 Report Posted September 23, 2017 Kenny Dorham - Una Mas (Blue Note). Blue label Liberty Van Gelder pressing. It's pressings like this where I realize that those bright RVG CDs aren't so far off from the original LPs as I originally thought. Rudy liked his midrange. Quote
sidewinder Posted September 23, 2017 Report Posted September 23, 2017 Jutta Hipp ‘At The Hickory House, Vol 2’ (Toshiba). Another great sounding reissue. Quote

Dmitry Posted September 24, 2017 Report Posted September 24, 2017 Robin Kenyatta - GIRL FROM MARTINIQUE US ECM pressing from 1973, promo. A very strong record, very confident playing by Kenyatta and the band. Is it on cd? Quote

I've this issue too. It sounds so different from the Conn. cd which has much more high frequency information. The Toshiba LP sounds fuller and arguably less thrilling perhaps even dull by comparison . I've kept both? Quote
Royal Oak Posted September 24, 2017 Report Posted September 24, 2017 ^ While I prefer later Horace, all Horace is ace Quote

Strange, didn’t sound that deficient to me at the high frequencies. In fact, much better all round than I was expecting. I have the Music Matters 2x45 and will have to check how that lines up. No doubt, even better still. Edited September 24, 2017 by sidewinder Quote

Yep, I got it as a present from a dear buddy of mine. While no t a great fan of compilations, this is an awesome slice of the CTI oeuvre, I enjoy it a lot. Whoever compiled it, did a superb job. Dmitry Posted September 25, 2017 Report Posted September 25, 2017 (edited) Willie Bobo - BOBO MOTION, original 1967 mono. I'm sure stereo sounds more interesting, but this is what I got. A nice, funky album, displaying technical mastery of those on it. The band personnel is not listed, I hear someone similar to Plas Johnson there. It's a top of the line, swinging band. All the tunes were arranged by Bert Keyes and Sonny Hill, names that are not immediately recalled by my unencumbered memory. Also dig the cover. Edited September 26, 2017 by Dmitry Quote
