Much as I love Lars Gullin the music here sounds both strikingly and obviously Scandinavia. Not bad for £4 from Fopp! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 22, 2018 Report Posted February 22, 2018 Thanks -- will have to check it out. I do like Gullin though some of it is a little 'soft' for my Americanized ears. I guess it's the same problem I have with some (not all) Mulligan. I like punchy arrangements and husky baritone playing. But then again I've heard Mats Gustafsson play Gullin live and that well-placed caress can be just as hardcore as anything else. Quote
mjazzg Posted February 22, 2018 Report Posted February 22, 2018 Ornette Coleman - Who's Crazy, Volume 2 Finally plugged the gap in my collection. What marvellous music this is, it's like discovering Ornette all over again. I like it when that happens with an artist you think you know well Quote

mjazzg Posted February 23, 2018 Report Posted February 23, 2018 LP 1, New Phonic Art. Possibly the least successful recording of the three ensembles featured in the box followed by John Stevens/Evan Parker - Longest Night, Vol.1 [Ogun] Decidedly successful Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 23, 2018 Report Posted February 23, 2018 I have had a couple of copies of that DGG box over the years and tend to agree. Wired is probably the best in there. Glad to see Iskra 1903 represented but feel that the Incus set and of course the Wachsmann era far eclipse what's in these grooves. I used to be way into New Phonic Art and the aggressiveness of this particular album but the one I return to -- if any -- is the Wergo, or for that matter, Kagel's Exotica LP. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted February 23, 2018 Report Posted February 23, 2018 (edited) Sonny Rollins - worktime (Prestige). Although it's a later pressing where the title became one word instead of two, it still has Van Gelder in the deadwax. Whoever owned this before me either played the hell out of it or he/she had one of those old-fashioned ceramic cartridges. The vinyl surface is almost white - lots of surface noise. I had to wet clean it to clear some of it. One of my favorite Sonny records. Wow, what a difference between Side 1 & Side 2. Side 2 is mint... looks unplayed. Clearly the previous owner only liked Side 1. Edited February 23, 2018 by Kevin Bresnahan Quote
