HutchFan Posted March 18, 2024 Report Posted March 18, 2024 Roy Eldridge - Dale's Wail (Verve, 2 LPs) Supremely relaxed small-group swing. Eldridge's absolute mastery is evident in every note. Quote

jazzbo Posted March 19, 2024 Report Posted March 19, 2024 I spent some time over this weekend to reconfigure my LP playback. Rather than sending the output from my phono preamp in DSD format to my DAC, I am using the balanced analog output of the phono preamp into a ZBIT and from there single-eneded out to the second input of the SEWE300B. This means I no longer have remote volume or balance control, nor does the path go through a ZROCK2 into the SEWE300B. Overall really good sound–just lacking a little bit of “oomph” to lower midrange and bass that a ZROCK2 would provide. (I have a ZROCK3 on order to remedy this situation). Listened to one of my favorite LPs bought in the mid-seventies, Flora Purim “500 Miles High–Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival.” Wow. I love this music, this recording, and the history I have with it. Now listening to Bob Dylan Bootleg Series Vol. 10, “Another Self Portrait” LP 1. Sounds quite good. . . just wish it has a bit more bass. 700×707 142 KB Quote

I have a couple of his more recent CDs, a Gary McFadden tribute, "Wish Me Well" (2006) & an Ellington tribute, "Ellington Saxophone Encounters" (2012). I bought both mainly because they have Gary Smulyan on them but I have no regrets as there is some great playing by all on these two. Quote

I'm also fond of his Blanton/Webster and Porgy and Bess cds. And "Blue Skylight," his Mingus and Mulligan one, is excellent. Edited March 21, 2024 by jazzbo Quote

Even I did slow down buying more CD's these might be interesting for me as big band fan and I will have a look for Items with reasonable price. And yes Gary Smulyan is a fine bariton player Thanks for the Info Edited March 21, 2024 by jazzcorner Quote
