jazzbo Posted November 12, 2012 Report Posted November 12, 2012 Well, I have all the stuff on cd so I get the lps just for a taste of vinyl goodness, and that works out just fine for me. Getting a new phono preamp in a week or so that I think will make vinyl sound even better (tubed phono preamp for the first time since my dad's Dynaco system when I was a wee lad, looking forward to it, a Decware ZP3). Big Beat Steve Posted November 12, 2012 Report Posted November 12, 2012 Well, I have all the stuff on cd so I get the lps just for a taste of vinyl goodness, and that works out just fine for me. I understand, but being a vinyl man at heart I came from the opposite end. At least the Storyvilles from that LP have long since been completed on vinyl. Enjoy your listening!! Quote

jeffcrom Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 James Newton - Water Mystery (Gramavision). 1986; no CD issue, I don't think. It ranges from "third-streamy" to swinging. John Carter tears it up on "The Crips." Quote
jeffcrom Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 The Art of Rahsaan Roland Kirk (Atlantic two-fer). When I owned fewer than ten jazz albums, this was one of them. It hasn't gotten pulled off the shelf for awhile, but I was in the mood tonight. It still seems like a pretty good anthology of Kirk's 1966-71 Atlantic recordings. Quote

sidewinder Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 (edited) The Art of Rahsaan Roland Kirk (Atlantic two-fer). That was a great series - and I agree that the selection is pretty damn good. I have two other favourites from this series - the Charles Mingus and the Freddie Hubbard, Edited November 13, 2012 by sidewinder Quote
jazzbo Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 This two lp set just sounds phenomenal. (And I love the music). I have the material on French CBS cds, but they just will never sound this great. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted November 14, 2012 Report Posted November 14, 2012 (edited) Stan Getz - Sweet Rain (original Van Gelder pressing). One of my favorite Getz dates and I don't know exactly why. It just hits me right. EDIT: Why is it that most Verve vinyl (like CTI vinyl) is noisy? You find "Van Gelder" in the deadwax and you figure it'll sound good but the crackles & pops drive me nuts. There are times when CD is better. Getz's "Sweet Rain" would seem like one of them. Edited November 14, 2012 by Kevin Bresnahan Quote
JSngry Posted November 14, 2012 Report Posted November 14, 2012 EDIT: Why is it that most Verve vinyl (like CTI vinyl) is noisy? CTI vinyl was clean back in the day when it was new. They used that stuff in stereo stores to demo equipment. Ron Carter should get back royalties from how many speakers his bass sound sold... Maybe they got played a lot by people who weren't always careful. In fact, no maybe about it! Quote
marcello Posted November 14, 2012 Report Posted November 14, 2012 Re: CTI - The sound was good, the vinyl was fairly crappy. Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted November 15, 2012 Report Posted November 15, 2012 Elvin Jones - Midnight Walk (Atlantic) Kind of an uneven record. Dig one tune, eh on the next. The electric piano tracks don't do much for me. Not an audiophile's dream record but a bit better sounding than the Collectables CD. Quote
