ssjazz Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 Enjoying Gerry Mulligan Select disk 3. I was surprised that I like the "Stringtime" material. Especially "Out of Nowhere". Gerry Mulligan Select Quote
Shawn Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 The Anita O'Day set is indeed a wonderful thing. Unfortunately, I had to sell mine a few years ago. Quote
Shawn Posted April 14, 2009 Report Posted April 14, 2009 Joe Pass - Complete Pacific Jazz Quartet Sessions (disc one) Excellent! Quote
king ubu Posted April 14, 2009 Report Posted April 14, 2009 Played almost the entire Columbia Small Group set over the past few days. Some pretty nice, some nice and some pretty drab stuff... beats me why they included that tired Hawkins/Terry date but then omitted the Burrell sessions with Leo Wright (maybe they thought Wrights intonation was even worse than Hawkins' tiredness? Not even Terry sounds good on that date!) I think the best of it may be the Ruby Braff session, some great playing there, for sure! This won't be a favourite box here, but it's nowhere as bad as regretting to have it (don't write PMs, I'll not sell...) Quote
sidewinder Posted April 14, 2009 Report Posted April 14, 2009 beats me why they included that tired Hawkins/Terry date Am I allowed to say that I really like that session? Quote

Guest Bixieland Posted April 14, 2009 Report Posted April 14, 2009 The Columbia set is nice. Glad I got it. I would describe it as chock full of variety -- and all the sessions are upbeat with so much great talent sprinkled throughout. I forget which sessions I like/dislike...most were good. I only remember a few tracks not doing much for me (Lou Donaldson, perhaps? - though I'll probably like them next time! I'm like that.) :blush2: Overall -- good set, with superb sound quality. I can't think of very many black boxes that don't have a few so-so tracks. That said, I can understand why it's "Last Chance." They're probably letting the lease expire, rather than print another run. There's more "important" and/or better selling sets that need to back in print! Quote
BruceH Posted April 14, 2009 Report Posted April 14, 2009 The One and Only Miss Anita O'Day - Disc 9... I don't care if I'm alone on this one.. but still reminds of what Glenn Close might sound like as a jazz singer... now Disc 5 You are clearly not alone on this one. I have read a lot of positive posts on this set from other board members on the O'Day set. And if you feel a bit isolated, how should I feel now...listening to the Mildred Bailey set? CD2. Very enjoyable stuff. Hey, I love the Mildred Bailey set! (Though I think I love the O'Day set even more.) Beyond lies the Quote
jazzbo Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 Not the Mosaic, but I'm listening to Herbie Nichols on the Blue Note version. Quote
Cliff Englewood Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 Not the Mosaic, but I'm listening to Herbie Nichols on the Blue Note version. The one that is soon to go OOP, at least according to the last e-mail from True Blue, it's on "Last Chance" alert. :rcry Quote
jazzbo Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 Right. I have the Mosiac, also had the Blue Note but sold it years ago. (The sets have different transfers by different engineers and I prefer the Mosaic by a slight margin). I did however buy the Blue Note set for my dad after the Mosaic was out of print, and I'm listening to his copy. Such wonderful music! Quote
Soulstation1 Posted April 15, 2009 Author Report Posted April 15, 2009 JJ Johnson Mosaic Set Could be the best set ever Quote
paul secor Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 beats me why they included that tired Hawkins/Terry date Am I allowed to say that I really like that session? Please do. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 I like that one too. I've even kept the old single cd! Quote
king ubu Posted April 17, 2009 Report Posted April 17, 2009 I played discs 1-4 of the Bud Shank set yesterday - lovely music, all of it interesting, and some parts of it very, very good! Looking forward a lot to playing disc 5 now, with Carmell Jones! Quote
Victor Christensen Posted April 18, 2009 Report Posted April 18, 2009 Nat King Cole, disc 5, I rarely listen to it, biggest Mosaic box so far (18 CD's), almost too much Vic Quote
kinuta Posted April 18, 2009 Report Posted April 18, 2009 Charles Mingus Complete Candid # 1. I had most of this on individual cds but the Mosaic sounds better to me. Quote
king ubu Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 Over the weekend, the Louis Prima portion of the Prima/Manone set, and disc 1 of the Dizzy (+ related Verve dates by him). Now: the great Wingy Manone portion of the Prima/Manone, almost done with the final disc, the booze version of "I've Got a Note" is indeed fun, he he Quote
ssjazz Posted April 23, 2009 Report Posted April 23, 2009 Woody Herman Select My copy of this Select set arrived today. I remembered how much I had liked this band when I heard them live in '66 or '67. I had just one of these Phillips albums on LP at the time. I haven't had a turntable since about '90, and had heard only "Woody's Winners" in recent times. So I wasn't sure how much to trust my memory of this band. I had hesitated purchasing this Phillips set in case it didn't live up to my memory. My memory was right! Listening to disk 1, I think this will become one of my favorite Mosaic sets! Quote
ghost of miles Posted April 23, 2009 Report Posted April 23, 2009 Deep thought: I actually have the Mosaic phone number memorized. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 Inspired by king ubu - Chambers/Kelly VeeJay - CD1 Quote
tranemonk Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 I've got them on speed dial on my cell... Deep thought: I actually have the Mosaic phone number memorized. Quote
