David,

Congratulations!! That's wonderful news indeed. I caught a snippet of your Artie Shaw segment the other day, and I was very impressed with your knowledge, poise, diction, etc. etc. It's an honor to know the local celebrity.

I know you have many ideas, and don't need recommendations, but here it is: Gerry Mulligan!!!

I was very disappointed to see the Anniversary issue of Down Beat, and not see any musician naming Mulligan as his or her greatest influence.

Bol, I'm glad you enjoyed the Artie Shaw segment--I was actually a bit anxious about how that program would sound.

Regarding Gerry Mulligan, he is close--very close--to the heart of the show. ;)

Great news David - sorry I'm late to the show. I'll be looking for individual shows about Roscoe, Bowie, Von, Warne, Threadgill, Charles Tyler, Wadada, Hal Russell, Eddie Johnson, Fred Anderson, etc.

The local station WBLV, home of Lazaro Vega, aka Blue Lake, asked once if I'd fill in while Laz was on vacation. I said I'd do it if I didn't have to give "time and weather". They did not ask again. :D

You coming our way this summer? Ann and I might be able to mount an Organissimo based party.

Just remember "it is the public's bandwidth"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :P

Actually, Warne was already on my 40-shows-and-growing list. ^_^ And some others on the Nessa team are looking good for making the cut as well... That Bird/Diz Town Hall CD is a lock, I'll tell you that much!

Don't know yet whether we'll be up the Michigan way this summer or not, though we'd like to be... I'd thought about motoring up for the Organissimo Holland gig on July 15 (my mom went to Hope, so I always like tooling around Holland anyway--esp. this year). With the show on the agenda now, such a trip might be less likely, but I'll definitely drop you a line if we're coming.

You think time & weather are bad? We oughta start a "worst of PSAs" thread!

Congratulations GOM! It'll be fun, but also a service to the jazz community. The time is right for me, too, late night on Saturdays is generally when I surf this board, so I'll be tuning in while I chat.

Since others are already getting in their requests, here's one for Red Allen :tup

Taped the first program of Night Lights the other day; it will air this Saturday, July 3 at 11 p.m. on WFIU. The opening theme music is Mary Lou Williams' "Miss D.D.," from BLACK CHRIST OF THE ANDES; the closing theme is Gerry Mulligan's "Night Lights" (1963 version). Program 1 includes Charles Mingus' "Freedom," Duke Ellington's "Rhapsody in Blue," Miles Davis' "Freedom Jazz Dance," Nina Simone's "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free," Jackie McLean's "Omega" Rahsaan Roland Kirk's "Volunteered Slavery" and more. I'll up the link again on Saturday.

Thanks, all, for the congratulations & advice.  WFIU does indeed stream, and I'll post a link to it & as well as a program description each week.  The program will begin airing on Saturday, July 3 at 11 p.m.  (I'm hoping to have it archived, too, for those who aren't late-night owls.)

cool beans! better be archived as I believe 11 pm your time is sleepy time my time.

I just found out that Night Lights will indeed be archived. I'll post a link to that as well, once we have it established.

Thanks so much for your comments, guys! Next week's show will be on Jackie Paris... the 17th on Billie Holiday... the 24th (tentatively) on unreleased recordings of Miles w/Sam Rivers in Japan in 1964. And the shows will be archived... hoping that eventually I might get bumped up into a slightly earlier time-slot. Anyway, I really appreciate the feedback.

Congratulations on your debut program, GoM. It was a treat.

An hour format is difficult on the radio. It doesn't afford the opportunity to stretch out and relax the way you can with a program that is several hours long, or better still, a daily program. Too often, the hour format seems to steer the host towards being pedantic at the expense of being entertaining. You managed to avoid that trap and were highly informative and entertaining at the same time.

What's exciting is that you will only improve on your auspicious debut over time.

Again, congratulations.

Thanks much to you too, Linn. Agreed that it's a difficult program-length to pull off... sometimes I may end up doing two-parters, although I'd like to generally avoid them. Anyway, any feedback, positive or negative, is welcome.

Say, I think my avatar knows your avatar! Got any violent enemies you need me to lay waste to? ;)

Tonight on "Night Lights," it's singer Jackie Paris... the first performer to ever record a vocal version of "Round Midnight," a sometime collaborator with Charles Mingus, and a generally underappreciated, overlooked artist even among aficionados. I'll be playing the above-mentioned tracks along with selections from his Brunswick LP SKYLARK and his Impulse album THE SONG IS PARIS. On WFIU tonight around 11:10 (9:10 on the West Coast, 12:10 on the East).

Just recorded for broadcast this Saturday night at 11 p.m. on WFIU:

"The Day Lady Died," a one-hour tribute to Billie Holiday on the 45th anniversary of her death. Audio clips from Lester Young (from his 1958 interview w/Chris Albertson) & Billie herself, along with a recording of Frank O'Hara reading his celebrated poem "The Day Lady Died" not long before his own death in 1966. Plus plenty of Holiday music--"This Year's Kisses," "Long Gone Blues," "No More" (moodier-sounding alternate take), "Don't Worry 'Bout Me" and others.

Next week: Miles Davis w/Sam Rivers in Japan, 1964 (unreleased material that won't be on the SEVEN STEPS box) as well as Rivers' 1964 & '65 Blue Note dates w/members of Miles' quintet.

Hey David,

If the material is "unreleased," do you have any concern about clearance for the material?

Up for broadcast later tonight. 9:10 out West, 12:10 on the East Coast. Here's a link to time zones. Hoping, within a week or two, to have a webpage and a link to archived programs. And several Organissimo posters will get an appreciative mention on next week's Miles/Sam Rivers program.
