kh1958 Posted March 7, 2020 Report Posted March 7, 2020 Last night, Mimi Fox (solo guitar) at the Guitar Sanctuary in McKinney. Quote
kh1958 Posted March 12, 2020 Report Posted March 12, 2020 Tuesday night, at the House of Blues in Dallas, Kamasi Washington. In a concert "every note" of which was dedicated to McCoy Tyner (including a performance of Passion Dance), Kamasi's group featured his father on soprano and flute (he is very good), plus trombone (also quite a fine player), voice, keyboards, bass (doubling on acoustic and bass guitar), and two drummers. At the HOB, there is a standing room only area on the floor, which was packed, and a seated balcony (half or less full). The youngish crowd was very enthusiastic for a nearly two hour long concert featuring extended solo work from every player. Kamasi's solos were mostly in updated Pharoah Sanders land (a land that I'm happy to revisit). I quite enjoyed the concert; it was better than what I've heard on record. Quote
BFrank Posted March 13, 2020 Report Posted March 13, 2020 I have tickets for Parlour Game with Jenny Scheinman violin, Allison Miller drums, Carmen Staaf piano and Tony Scherr bass on Sunday at SFJAZZ. Sadly, that show and several others (incl the 2020 NEA Jazz Masters & Tribute Concert) over the next few weeks have been canceled. Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 13, 2020 Report Posted March 13, 2020 I don’t think there’s going to be much live music going on anywhere (in terms of clubs and concerts) for the next few weeks. Quote
Al in NYC Posted March 13, 2020 Report Posted March 13, 2020 According to what I see online this morning, all of the major NYC jazz clubs are still planning to be open (although the Vanguard has cut back to one set on weeknights). Given what's going on here I can't imagine that that is going to last. Was supposed to go out tonight to catch Kirk Lightsey at Mezzrow. Although I would like to help them in what I am sure is their hour of need, I'm not sure if I'm going to make it. Might be the last show I'm able to see for a while though... Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 13, 2020 Report Posted March 13, 2020 The Shalin Liu performing arts center just cancelled all their events for March, including a Bad Plus show that I was planning to go to on March 22nd. Quote
jlhoots Posted March 13, 2020 Report Posted March 13, 2020 Lots of music events being canceled / postponed here in New Mexico. Quote

Al in NYC Posted March 13, 2020 Report Posted March 13, 2020 Roy Haynes 95th birthday shows at the Blue Note next weekend have been cancelled and replaced. Certainly seems prudent. Quote
kh1958 Posted March 13, 2020 Report Posted March 13, 2020 The French Quarter Festival in New Orleans has been postponed from April to October. Quote
LWayne Posted March 14, 2020 Report Posted March 14, 2020 (edited) None. Was supposed to see Jaimie Branch tonight in Cleveland (cancelled), Ethan Iverson and Tom Harrell in Buffalo on Sunday (cancelled), and Ken Vandermark, Nate Wooley, and Paul Lytton on return to Pittsburgh on Monday (also cancelled). Notice a trend? Thankful for music I have been able to see this month (Patrick Breiner and Charles Tolliver before that) but looks like no more live music until late spring. Possibly... Justin V Posted March 14, 2020 Report Posted March 14, 2020 (edited) What was going to be a great month has been wiped out. The Roy Haynes and Norman Simmons gigs that I had planned on attending in New York have been canceled. Before making plans to visit New York, I had a ticket for a Charles Lloyd/Gerald Clayton and Alfredo Rodriguez/Pedrito Martinez double bill that has now been canceled. Although it was going to be hard for me to attend, Brotzmann's solo stop in Buffalo has been canceled. Locally, gigs by Vandermark/Lytton/Wooley, Jaimie Branch, Joe Daley/Scott Robinson/Warren Smith and Simone Baron have been canceled. John Clayton was scheduled to appear at 4 area venues with a local symphony orchestra to perform a commissioned work. I caught the world premiere on Wednesday and the other 3 performances were canceled. It is a shame because Clayton's writing and soloing were at a high level. Here's hoping for a better and healthy April. Edited March 14, 2020 by Justin V Quote
relyles Posted March 14, 2020 Report Posted March 14, 2020 (edited) Tonight in Northampton, MA I caught Steve Swell's Kende Dreams with Rob Brown (as), William Parker (b) and William TA Thompson (d). This may be my last live music experience for a while since it seems like most shows in my area after this weekend are being canceled. At least it was a good one that will hopefully hold me over for a while. Edited March 14, 2020 by relyles Quote

First live concert since Grant Stewart in February. What a delight. Yazz Ahmed at Kings Place next month if London avoids more restrictions. Anthony London I would love to see Yazz Ahmed. Quote
jlhoots Posted October 30, 2020 Report Posted October 30, 2020 No live music here. Largest number of Covid cases here today since the beginning of the pandemic. Quote
BFrank Posted October 30, 2020 Report Posted October 30, 2020 I'd love to see ANY live music (and I don't mean on my iPad!) Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted October 30, 2020 Report Posted October 30, 2020 Me three - and not a group playing in a back yard like I’ve heard about or in a car at a drive in.... me has faith that we will get there next year some time.... Quote

What kind of venue and what kind of protocols were being put in place? for me I’m just not comfortable with any gatherings at all. I’m so grateful to be able to work from home and follow all distancing measures here in NJ in order to keep my wife and I safe. Quote

One at the Vortex the other at a concert hall venue. Vortex is seating 20 max socially distances and masked. Other venue also doing similar. I've working from home too and not overly comfortable and have avoided large numbers. I've so far thought the risk factors were sufficiently mitigated for these concerts but infection rates have gone through the roof here recently so may well have revised the decision to attend. Lockdown will resolve that dilemma. Quote

BeBop Posted April 15, 2021 Report Posted April 15, 2021 (edited) I wasn't sure when I'd be able to.post in this thread again. Tonight at Andy's in Chicago, Eric Schneider. It's been a really nice show. Casual and friendly. The audience, perhaps ten people at the first set. I don't think I've been to Andy's since seeing Organissimo here. Will be back again Friday.
