fasstrack Posted November 20, 2009 Report Posted November 20, 2009 It was earlier this week, but I wanted to mentioned that Don Friedman had a very nice group that played twice this week. The attraction for me was the great trumpet player from Holland, Ack Van Rooyen. I wanted to meet him in the Hague but didn't. He is a wonderful, musical, inventive player with great control and beautiful sound. He played flugelhorn the whole set at Smalls. I did finally get to meet him and he is very nice, at almost 80! The group also included the excellent bassist Martin Wind, and an old friend, also from the Hague, drummer Hans Braber. So it was like seeing family. Friedman has great ears so a lot of interesting things happened, like different instrumental pairings and nice trading. It was all on the fly with tunes everyone knew, but when you have improvisors that good and that seasoned, who listen on that level nice things develop. If you ever get a chance to hear Van Rooyen either here or in Europe---grab it. ˙He is world class. The people loved him. Quote

save0904 Posted November 25, 2009 Report Posted November 25, 2009 Gerald Clayton Trio at the Stageclub / Hamburg Quote
fasstrack Posted November 28, 2009 Report Posted November 28, 2009 I heard Mike Longo and Ben Brown in duo at Smalls. They have a nice rappoire and Longo plays his ass off. I never sat and listened attentively to him. Excellent, swinging player with a lot of depth and interesting, diverse influences. Ben Brown has a nice time feel and is a good listener. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 Damn, dude, you sure go to a lot of shows. Quote
BillF Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 Tonight I saw the Jerry Bergonzi Trio with Dave Santoro on bass and Andrea Michelutti on drums at Manchester's Band on the Wall. Superb stuff! Quote
Chalupa Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 (edited) Damn, dude, you sure go to a lot of shows. Well I'm fortunate in two respects - The first is that I live in downtown Philly so I can walk or bike to all of the venues and the other is that being close to NYC everybody comes here. EDIT: Oh and my wife has me on a very long leash. Edited December 4, 2009 by J.H. Deeley Quote

mjazzg Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 Last night - Joe Mcphee, Alex Hawkins, Steve Noble, John Edwards at cafe Oto, London. truly magnificent, deeply soulful music from all four musicians. McPhee was titanic on tenor and searing on soprano. Alex Hawkins played Hammond in a way I've not heard it played before (that's good!) and really brought a 'free' improvisor's touch to the instrument. Noble and Edwards - best rhythm section in UK? Easily, on this evidence Great night Quote
kh1958 Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 Dave Burrell, solo piano, at Sandaga Market. I thought this would be interesting, but it turned out to be fantastic. The first set consisted of two long Dave Burrell compositions, The Edge--an inside/outside piece with a very compelling melody at its center, followed by The Rag (which it was). I was really blown away by the first set. The second set was completely different consisting mostly of standards--Ellington (It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got that Swing), Strayhorn (Lush Life), Monk (Round Midnight), other standards (Autumn Leaves, You Go to My Head--the latter was the highlight of the second set), a Jelly Roll Morton piece. The second set was wonderful as well. Dave Burrell is clearly an underappreciated master pianist. Quote
Chalupa Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 Dave Burrell is clearly an underappreciated master pianist. Definitely. I feel blessed to have him as a local resident who plays fairly often around town. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted December 15, 2009 Report Posted December 15, 2009 How was your experience of the Dixon gig? I heard from Stephen Haynes that they had a lot of sound problems. Quote
Chalupa Posted December 15, 2009 Report Posted December 15, 2009 It was a very good show. The sound was fine. I think the sound problem for the musicians was that they couldn't hear each other through the monitors. I know that Dixon complained that he couldn't hear himself but we could hear him though - pretty LOUD w/ all of the electronic processing on his trumpet. Dixon didn't play all that much and what he did play was more of a textural thing than actual soloing. I would definitely go see the Exploding Star Orchestra again. Apparently they did some tunes that have not been released - not sure if they have been recorded - that were really nice. Check this out.... the drummer wanted - and got - two tympani drums which he never played. Cost the promoter $400. Quote
king ubu Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 Mary Halvorson Trio tonight - been looking forward to this one for months! Saw her in spring with Taylor Ho Bynum's sextet, a fine but somewhat heady, restrained set. Quote
