Uptown Records Discography

Recommended Posts

Since some of the posts in the Beehive thread were starting to gravitate Uptown Records, I thought we should start a different thread. I'm doing To Tadd With Love right now and working through Mike's tutorial. The process doesn't look that difficult yet (fingers crossed) so I'll keep you posted.

One question for Chuck: the album doesn't list matrix numbers or alternates. Were there any. If so, can you please post or send them to me, if it's not inconvenient. My email is blewin2222@aol.com. If that doesn't work, I can give a fax number. Thanks.

My view is that anything recorded before the label's existence - the Bird, Lee Wiley, Chet Baker, Serge Chaloff, etc. are not "Uptown sessions" - they are private tapes later issued by Uptown. So they would be included in a different kind of listing.

Re: master/matrix numbers - this is the kind of thing that is only known by the producer/company. If they can be learned, great - especially if we can learn about take numbers, etc. If we can learn recording sequence (even without any numbers), great. Sequence the selections as they were performed at the session. If, as in MANY cases, we have NO idea as to the recording sequence, I use the original issue sequence, showing a-01 for side A, track 1, etc. That way someone looking at the discography will know that the source of sequence is the ISSUE, not the recording log. Most discographies don't bother to make this distinction (and many list issue sequence but just don't tell you).

I did a look at the listing, I would say everything up to 34 would be in (including the unissued stuff if that wasn't "historical" material), then 37, 43 - I think that's it.

All right, I've finished up one date. As soon as I finish up the other three dates I have, I'll be emailing it to Mike. If others would like to give me the information, please do. This is fun and I wouldn't mind doing it if others give me the information.

BTW, for those who may be a little daunted by it, if you follow Mike's tutorial, you won't have a problem.

Brad, thanks for the feedback. I was tied up most of the weekend with Holiday shopping but hope to give it a try later this week. If I encounter any problems I will send you the details on the other Uptown issues I have.

Thank you for your efforts,

Don

Checked the Uptown Discography. Can help with details that seem to be missing for the following vinyls:

- Allen Eager 'Renaissance'

- Jimmy Gourley 'The Left Bank of New York' (Toot's Suite is credited to Holman)

- Tommy Flanagan 'Nights at the Vanguard'

Also the Carl Fontana date 'The Great Fontana' (September 1985) is missing. Bought the vinyl when it came out plus the CD with the two additional tracks which was issued later.

I believe Brad is taking care of the Fontana. For the others, if you can supply timings and issue sequence - to keep the typing minimal, how about this format - letters correspond to tracks in the existing draft:

ex: Allen Eager - (location needed)

side A: a 3:36/c 5:35/b 12:18

side B: d 7:49/e 5:11/f 6:46

I have all the issue numbers already, just waiting for the track sequence - and release years would also be nice.

Thanks!

Mike
