Jazz Kat Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 (edited) Hey yo' people. You know what attracted to Grant Green's I Wanna Hold Your Hand? The title. I guess Green took the same Wes Montgomery route, which I do like. What are your thoughts on this album. I have not yet listened to this date. Did Green sell out for this one? OR is the title mis-leading me, and it is actually a nice blowing session? What are the highlights? Edited January 19, 2005 by Jazz Kat Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 A friend gave me a copy of this on cassette (was it you, Joe or Doug?) before it was re-issued on CD and I did not recognize the title track until I actually read the title of it. Selling out? Hardly. All of Grant's records with Larry Young are essential, imo. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 19, 2005 Author Report Posted January 19, 2005 Cool. I'll have to get some do up to get some cd's. I got about 10 albums I'm thinking about. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 19, 2005 Author Report Posted January 19, 2005 May I suggest a move to the Artists or Recommendations area? Mike Well, I guess I wanted people to describe it to me also. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 I moved it to "re-issues". The discography forum is for "who, when, where" type questions, not for general "is this release cool or not?" No biggie. As far as the sound, it's got Larry Young, Elvin Jones, and Hank Mobley on it. How can it be bad? Seriously, I love it and I think the version of "This Could Be The Start Of Something" is one of the best examples of Grant's soloing on record. Quote
Big Al Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 Elvin on "Speak Low" is as close to a volcano as I've ever stood! Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 I think it ranks amongst Green's top ten recordings. Quote
Brad Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 Check this out from Soul Stream in response to a comment I made on a thread about Hank's Reach Out album: I, too never, made the move on this one. Sort of wanted to but for some reason never did. Somebody once compared it to Grant's I Want to Hold Your Hand, I suppose because they were both pop standards. Any validity in that? NO!!!!!! Grant Green's "I Want To Hold Your Hand" is absolute wonder. A lone Beatles cover done BEAUTIFULLY!!! Other than that, the titles are all straight ahead. One of the best organ albums ever made. GET THIS CD NOW!!!! Or forget about enjoying life. Quote

Sundog Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 (edited) Really like the title track. A deceptively simple solo, one of Grant's finest "less is more" moments. On a side note.... Is it just me or is there way too much reverb on the title track? At times it sounds like a 747 is talking off! Edited January 19, 2005 by Sundog Quote
jlhoots Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 Excellent music, excellent cover. Quote
wolff Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 It's a nice mellow, laid back album. It's on my late evening shelf. Quote

Joe G Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 Personal-historical footnote: this was the album that introduced me to the whole organ trio thang (Many thanks to Steve Frarey for that!) Quote
BFrank Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 Just pick up the Larry Young Mosaic box. That's all you'll need for a while! B-) ... unfortunately it'll cost ya' - it's OOP. But if you can find it for a reasonable price somewhere - pick it up! (BTW, it won't be reasonable on ebay) Quote

(BTW, it won't be reasonable on ebay) True dat, but all of the Green/Young/Jones albums are in print (Into Somethin' came out as a Conn, but I believe that can still be had fairly cheaply), so springing for the Larry Young Mosaic, while essential, isn't necessarily of the utmost importance. Soul Stream Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 Jazz Kat, if you want to be a jazz guitarist. In my opinion, a very, very, very good way to start your journey is to get Grant Green's "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and learn every song on it note for note. 10 bucks for this CD may save you tuition to Berkely. JSngry Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 Great side. And STREET OF DREAMS is maybe even better. No Hank, but oh well... Buy 'em both and decide for yourself! Quote
Brad Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 yessirree, Street of Dreams is fantastic. One of Grant's best. Quote

Soul Stream Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 Hmmm. Streets of Dreams the best? I like it, but out of the blistering albums that paired Young and Green, Streets would be at the bottom of my list. Not sure what even would compete w/ Stella or Start of Something Big or Corcovado or Speak Low from Streets. Wish You Love is a standout track, but the rest of Streets is relatively mild compared to the other output of that pairing. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 i totally disagree with you. i think IWTHYH is a bore but street of dreams is excellent one of my favorite albums, actually. i sold IWTHYH a while ago. maybe horns didn't work well with the green/young/jones group though, since i find into somethin' sort of weak as well. Jazz Kat Posted January 19, 2005 Author Report Posted January 19, 2005 Is this a 'rare' album, to an extent? I will probaly have to order it? Is it my best bet that I wont find it at Borders? I should check out some vinyl stores. Quote
