Jimmy Smith: Blue Note or Verve?

Big Al

Which Jimmy Smith era do you prefer (not necessarily which era do you think is his greatest)?

Not sure if this subject has ever been broached, but which Jimmy Smith albums do you find yourself listening to most often: those which he did for Blue Note, or those which he did for Verve? This is not a question of which do you think are his greatest recordings (and the answer may be the same for both questions), because some may enjoy his Verve output and yet think that his Blue Note output was of a greater quality. Or vice versa!

So let the discussion begin, and thanks again for all the greeeeeeeeaze, J.O.S.!!!

I like them all.  He did some pretty funny records with Verve (the ones where he sings are hilarious!) but his organ playing is always top notch.  There is something in even the schmaltzy ones that make them worthwhile.

I love his take on "Satisfaction" I wouldn't exactly call it singing though! B-) The way he directs the band on the alternate take is priceless.

Look out Grady T....... Play it Kenny Burrell..... Yeah Kenny!

The BNs are where he defined the style and where the most "jazz" resides. The bulk of the Verves are fine documents of his playing but much of it is too commercially oriented to beat out the BNs for my taste.

I have to agree, but then you gotta love th-

oh man, who put the damned sticker on there?
