sjarrell Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 (edited) Hey- I've been asked by someone who reissues vinyl as part of his business if there were any Mainstream titles I'd recommend, and I figured I knew of a bunch of folks that might have a better handle on Mainstream's output than me. Anything worthy that's tough to find in other formats? Remember, commerce is the goal here. And no, I'm not making a dime off of this. Thanks! Sandy Edited February 24, 2005 by sjarrell Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 Suggest looking here: http://www.freeform.org/music/Mainstream.html I would love to see things like: Hadley Caliman, Curtis Fuller, Hal Galper, Roy Haynes - I can't recall seeing any of these on CD ever. Mike Quote
jazzman21 Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 Most of Blue Mitchell's stuff on that label is very good in my opinion. Quote
JSngry Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 Hadley Caliman - IAPETUS. GOTTA get IAPETUS! Maynard Ferguson - COLOR HIM WILD & SEXTET. Seriously. Sonny Red's side was none too bad. There's more... a bossa side w/Jim Hall, Jimmy Rainey, & Zoot Sims; the Terry/Brookmeyer stuff; cuppla Charles Brown sides that some might find cringeworthy, but some will dig. There's more... Quote
sjarrell Posted February 23, 2005 Author Report Posted February 23, 2005 Thanks, guys- the label discography's a great resource! I'll pass the suggestions along. On the same tip- any long-forgotten Prestige titles you'd hanker on wax? How are the later Timmons sessions? Quote
couw Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 I only have a Buddy Terry LP tucked away some where. I need to dig it out, memory says it was pretty good. Quote

Joe Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Charles McPherson's Mainstream sides, particularly his "Billie Holiday songbook" album SIKU YA BIBI, are worthy of reissue IMO. I'm also a fan of Johnny Coles' KATUMBO. Quote

Michael Fitzgerald Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Unfortunately, I don't buy new vinyl anymore so I wouldn't be the market for these reissues. Now, if CDs were an option, I'd be there! Mike Quote

sjarrell Posted February 25, 2005 Author Report Posted February 25, 2005 (edited) Let's just hope it happens! Even a portion of the list would be nice. I'll give an update when there's one to give. Thanks again for the help! Edit: PS: Couw- I forgot the Buddy Terry. I'll fix that asap! Edited February 25, 2005 by sjarrell Quote
DMP Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 I've always considered Carmen McRae's "Live at Sugar Hill" one of her 2 best albums. The Maynard Ferguson's are also very good, and the Buddy Terry was a real sleeper. The best part of the label, in the later years, were the covers - you don't see photos like that every day! Quote
couw Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Edit: PS: Couw- I forgot the Buddy Terry. I'll fix that asap! I put it on the "listen to this stuff again"-pile. Those "envelope" type gatefolds are awkward. Quote
sjarrell Posted February 26, 2005 Author Report Posted February 26, 2005 Those "envelope" type gatefolds are awkward. The dread Uni-Pak? I never understood it either. Someone thought they were cool enough to patent, though... Quote

sidewinder Posted February 26, 2005 Report Posted February 26, 2005 (edited) How about the Shelly Manne 'Manne-kind' and Helen Merril 'Mixes' ? Edited February 26, 2005 by sidewinder Quote
sjarrell Posted February 26, 2005 Author Report Posted February 26, 2005 Mannekind was on the list! I'll forward along the Merrill and McRae votes. Quote
