Brad Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 I'm wondering if this is the least active we've ever been. Of course, it is almost 130 in the am: 10 guests, 10 members 2 anonymous members Brad, Noj, sonic1, brownie, etherbored, b3-er, indigo, AfricaBrass, TheMusicalMarine, Ron S Quote

Jim Alfredson Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 My gig tonight got cancelled, that's why I'm here. Doing research on vacuum tubes... exciting! Quote
AfricaBrass Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 My gig tonight got cancelled, that's why I'm here. Doing research on vacuum tubes... exciting! That's a drag about your gig. I know the joy of buying tubes. I've got a few old Fender amps that need tubes and I have so many other things I'd rather spend the money on. I guess it's a good thing I'm not performing now. Quote
Brad Posted February 27, 2005 Author Report Posted February 27, 2005 Too bad about the gig. Well, I'm throwin' in the towel. See ya in the am. Oh, yeah, it already is. Quote
Jim Dye Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 I'm avoiding painting our living room. The only time my wife and I can get anything done is when the kids are in bed! Quote
brownie Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 I'm an early riser.... that goes for Sundays too. And I have had the Board all to myself on several Sunday mornings in the past. With the afflux of new posters, this is changing now! Weather is mighty cold this Sunday morning in Paris, a little (very little) snow fell a couple of hours ago just to give a beautiful touch of white to the city. One of those Rise and Shine morning. Wishing a good night to all the people on the other side of the pond Quote
brownie Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 My gig tonight got cancelled, that's why I'm here. Is that because of the $15 dispute at the local bar? That would be deep shame Quote
sidewinder Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 Nice early start today, I have a vinyl sale to attend to . Absolutely superb sunny day but no snow unlike in Paris as Brownie mentions. I think about 4 members were using the board when I logged on this morning. Quote

Late Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 ... just read the subtitle of this thread ... I guess this morning I am fairly inactive. (Must be because we're listening to my wife's music this late a.m.) Quote

Late Posted February 28, 2005 Report Posted February 28, 2005 What does she like to listen to? Today it was: Blur, Beck, Kinks, and Jon Spenser Blues Explosion. Not bad, mind you, I was just having a heavy Bud Powell jones. But a guy must be democratic with the stereo and what comes out of it ... right? Actually, my wife's introduced me to a fair amount of rock music that I otherwise wouldn't ever hear. Quote

My wife has tortured me in the last 24 hours with Kenny G, the Redneck woman Gretchen Wilson, Toby Keith, and more smooth jazz than is humanly possible to take. Quote

I'd have to go for a drive in my car. Otherwise, I'd get too depressed. Kenny G is the least offensive of what you listed. Quote

I'd have to go for a drive in my car. Otherwise, I'd get too depressed. Kenny G is the least offensive of what you listed. I am depressed... Now I know why. I've been trying to go into my own world with my big headphones, but I have to come out and socialize and it hurts. As that great sage, Ralph Wiggum, once exclaimed, "It tastes like burning!" or "I bent my wookie." I don't know which is more appropriate, but he always has a saying that captures the truth. Quote
wesbed Posted February 28, 2005 Report Posted February 28, 2005 (edited) I am depressed... Now I know why. Jazz helps to create a positive mood for me. Unfortunately, the opposite is also true regarding non-jazz tunes. I grew-up on country music. It was all I knew till I was about 10 years old. My Dad played it all the time. I'm so far from country music, now, that I don't enjoy listening anymore. Even my Dad has progressed to classical music. The whinning/groaning songs about good ol' boys, prison, trucks, trains, women, and watermelon wine put me into an instant spiritual descent. Edited February 28, 2005 by wesbed Quote
Jazzmoose Posted February 28, 2005 Report Posted February 28, 2005 Damn, I love country. Give me some Jimmie Rodgers or Bill Monroe or *especially* Bob Wills and I'm a happy man! Of course, I can also relate, wesbed; I never listen to the ones I was overexposed to like Charlie Rich, Ray Price and such... Quote
wesbed Posted February 28, 2005 Report Posted February 28, 2005 (edited) Give me some Jimmie Rodgers or Bill Monroe or *especially* Bob Wills and I'm a happy man! Hey, Bob Wills is my man too. I credit Bob Wills with exposing me to a kind of music that caught my ear at a young age. A sound I could never forget but didn't know what it was till I was older. I don't consider Bob Wills to be 'just country.' Yes, his roots are country... or maybe swing? Bob Wills had the best damned fiddle player in the business, in his band. AfricaBrass Posted February 28, 2005 Report Posted February 28, 2005 I love at lot of older country music. It was around me growing up, but my parents were never around, so I didn't have any music forced upon me. I had nothing to rebel against. The new country music is just country-fied rock and pop. Give me some old Buck Owens records and I'm a happy camper. Jazz helps get me into a good mood also, but smooth jazz annoys me. I think I get upset by it because it is so formulaic. I can't imagine how anyone who really loves music could make this stuff. Quote

I remember when I became aware of Bob Wills. I was in my early twenties and I bought one of those Tiffany Transcription records. As I was listening to this music, I kept having this feeling that I'd heard it all my life. When Bob did his trademark, "ahh", I figured it out; I lived with my grandparents for a time when I was a little kid. They played this stuff ALL THE TIME. I visited their house soon after and found their western swing records and cassettes. Now that they've passed on, those records are with me. Bob Wills is still the king! Quote

wesbed Posted February 28, 2005 Report Posted February 28, 2005 From all I've read here, it seems to be incredibly difficult to make it as a musician these days. I remember, during the 1970s & 1980s, the only thing I spent money on was music. These days, however, there are so many more things one can spend money on. Cell phones, DVDs, computers and video games are just the beginning. Quote

I can see how difficult it would be for a musician to develop an audience. Quote
