"The High Art of the Low Countries"

First two episodes of a 3 part series I've had stashed on the TV recorder for over a year. Very enjoyable - Flemish painting and then the Dutch Golden Age. I used to teach a lot of 17thC European history so this proved fascinating. Although I've seen most of the pictures in reproduction, Andrew Graham-Dixon is very good at drawing out their hidden meanings through their historical context.

Now the pieces are slowly falling into place. I like this, it's very original and doesn't pander to the viewer at all. The little girl who plays a central role is really extraordinary.

Cilla ITV

Forget Cilla Black, watch it for Sheridan Smith, who is very, very good.

Not only a terrific actress but her take of Anyone Who Had A Heart was tremendous, better than the original Cilla Black cover version.

"Gotham" . . . interesting. Hasn't quite found its tone yet but we'll see.

I'll probably wait until after the season completes before I start watching it. I have too many shows queued up as it is...and I'm starting to get burned out on comic-related material in general.

Forget what I said...

I watched the pilot of Gotham and it was quite good. Great looking show, good cast, has promise.

I've also enjoyed the first two episodes of Forever.

"The High Art of the Low Countries"

Episode 3: Van Gogh, Mondrian, Magritte and Delvaux (never heard of him!). Oh, and briefly, Herge.

Note to self - record those popular programmes about painting more often. Very much enjoyed the ones I've watched of late.

The spirit of Lynch & Cronenberg is all over this.

I have to watch each episode twice, partly because I can't work it all out on the first viewing and partly because it's so potent and compelling.

Seasons 2 and 3 of this series had their good moments, but Season 4 was just awful. Not one really funny moment in the entire season. It seemed like every one involved was trying oh so hard to be funny and every single joke just fell flat.

Different writing & directing staff on that season, also a different show-runner. However, all of them returned for a back to form season 5.

I think there are a few good episodes in season 4 (particularly the Sophie B. Hawkins dance), but season 5 is a marked improvement throughout and got the series back in the right direction. I'm really looking forward to season 6 which will air on Yahoo after the first of the year.

Yes, there were a lot of Lost Highway inspired moments in the Whelan's house. In some ways it's a shame the pilot episode was so demanding on the viewers. I feel like I'm about the only one still eagerly awaiting every next episode. ;)

I watched that finale too. I'm glad the season is over.

This morning before leaving the house I watched Person of Interest from Tuesday, and now it's last night's Modern Family.

Whatever defects The Bridge has are overcome by the quality of Demian Bichir.

I like him, I like the show. I didn't like this season nearly as well as the first, just got a bit too ridiculous for me. If it comes back I'll watch it and see whehter the storyline is better.
