Hardbop is an idiot. And clifton is the most trigger-happy moderator of a forum I've ever seen. He closed one and deleted another thread I and Brandon Burke were engaged in over there with that other idiot, JazzRules. Two threads that had hardly even approached "lukewarm", much less "heated".

But whatever, it's their board. I won't be back.

Heaney's the main reason I don't post over there.

I'll never forget back when he still posted at JC, there was a poster named Randy Oliver, who was a seminary student. In one of the usual Wynton threads, Randy said something negative about Wynton. Now, to put things in perspective, Randy Oliver was as kind a soul as you'll ever hope to meet; anything negative from him was always on an analytical level (hence, the main reason why Heaney couldn't comprehend it), and in my conversations with him, he was everything one thinks of when they think of the term "good Christian."

In what must be considered the epitome of Heaney's classlessness, his response to Randy in that thread was, "Say a prayer for me, asshole."

Randy Oliver passed away shortly after that.

Since then, and this was about four years ago, not once has Heaney offered anything in the way of remorse or sorrow for what he said. The most I ever heard was that someone once said that "Heaney felt bad about it;" but not once in the thread that announced Randy's passing did Heaney ever offer anything in the way of an apology for what he said.

He carries this low standard of sub-humanity to this day.

I totally agree, Al. Heaney is a low-life and Randy was wonderfully balanced and civil. Heaney's infantile Wynton nonsense wears thing rather quickly, but one can dismiss it. In my case, the last straw was when he posted venomous non-reviews of my Bessie Smith book on Amazon. They eventually caught on to him and removes the review, and the second one he posted was deleted in short order.

I have been posting at AAJ recently, but he is now back there (and Mike seems to welcome him). I don't respond to any of his nonsense, but the vibes at AAJ are not good, so I will probably do as you have done, and, instead of ignoring Heaney, simply skip that board.

It's folks like Hardbop that I miss the least, when thinking back on the old BNBB.

And there are more aspects like that to the AAJ board (Hardbop, and a few others like him), than there ever are over here. Hence, this is my Internet home, and I only lurk occasionally over at AAJ (I check things out there maybe twice a week).

Hey, the word kerfuffle does exist!

From Merriam-Webster Online:

Main Entry: ker·fuf·fle

Pronunciation: k&r-'f&-f&l

Function: noun

Etymology: alteration of carfuffle, from Scots car- (probably from Scottish Gaelic cearr wrong, awkward) + fuffle to become disheveled

chiefly British : DISTURBANCE, FUSS

Here’s an interesting text about it from a site called World Wide Words:

KERFUFFLE

A commotion or fuss.

You will most commonly come across this wonderfully expressive word in Britain and the British Commonwealth countries (though the White House spokesman Ari Fleischer used it in January this year). It is rather informal, though it often appears in newspapers. One of the odder things about it is that it changed its first letter in quite recent times. Up to the 1960s, it was written in all sorts of ways—curfuffle, carfuffle, cafuffle, cafoufle, even gefuffle (a clear indication that its main means of transmission was in speech, being too rarely written down to have established a standard spelling). But in that decade it suddenly became much more popular and settled on the current kerfuffle. Lexicographers suspect the change came in response to the way that a number of imitative words were spelled, like kerplop and kerplunk.

In those cases, the initial ker– adds emphasis, as it does in other words, perhaps onomatopoeic but perhaps also borrowing the first syllable of crash. But we know kerfuffle was originally Scots and it’s thought that its first part came from Scots Gaelic car, to twist or bend. The second bit is more of a puzzle: there is a Scots verb fuffle (now known only in local dialect), to throw into disorder, dishevel, or ruffle. No obvious origin for it is known and experts suspect it was an imitative word. It is probably linked with Scots fuff, to emit puffs of smoke or steam, definitely imitative, which in the late eighteenth century also had a sense of going off in a huff or flying into a temper.

Some specialists think kerfuffle is also related to the Irish cior thual, confusion or disorder. It seems to be a minority opinion, though.

Well, it’s always nice to learn new words. I think I learnt the word soporific from Hardbop too.

I think the guy keeps a Thesaurus handy. He often uses synonyms in a strained way--I guess he is trying to show off, but it's often awkward. One dead giveaway is the fact that he frequently makes spelling mistakes--people who have impressive vocabularies generally know how to spell. Mainly, however, he seems to get childish delight from expressing opposite views, no matter how ludicrous they are--and they sure can be ludicrous. For example, his exaggerated, flaunting enthusiasm for Wynton, Crouch, Ratliff, et al, crosses the border of absurdity, IMO. However, cyberspace is full of trolls, and as I have said in a previous post, I think Heaney was way out of line when he tried to sabotage my Bessie Smith book on the Amazon site. I see that I am not the only one to have abandoned AAJ because of Heaney (who now, BTW, seems to have found the perfect companion in an equally offensive Wynton-is-the-greatest poster called Rob Damen. The two are made for each other. :D

That's all I have to say about that.

Hey, how about that Reagan guy! :w

I wasn't posting anywhere when Randy Oliver passed but if Big Al and Chris say he was a good dude then chances are he was a good dude. Count me as another person who is not a Hardbop fan. "Thin skinned" usually comes to mind when I think about Hardbop(and I try to avoid that every chance I get)and after reading Big Al's post "Lower Than Whale Shit in the Ocean" is right up there with it.
