AmirBagachelles Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 Awhile back, Michael Cuscuna said he might look into a set covering the four John Carter - Bobby Bradford group records (two on Revelation, two on Flying Dutchman). I finally got to hold Secrets in my hands this week, really nice vinyl, and a nice textured cover, I can't wait to spin it this weekend. This LP looks like it came from an impressive, caring label - Revelation. Can anybody bring us up to speed on who was behind it, what happened to it? Thanks! Quote
JSngry Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 I think it was ran, at least in part, by John William Hardy (whose name I also know from some Pacific Jazz liner notes) & Jon Horwich, whose name I don't know at all. Those are the names I see on the Revelation sides which I own. A not uninteresting catalog, to be sure. Small and eclectic, with some great Warne Marsh stuff that, except for NE PLUS ULTRA & a few full-length cuts on the Konitz Half Note set) ahve yet to see CD. Quote
Late Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 Amir — not really answering your question, but do you have this one: I always thought the Carter/Bradford sides came from Revelation, but apparently not (at least according to AMG) — they were originally on a label called Jive. At any rate, this is some prime Carter/Bradford material ... and the Tapscott is just as good, if not better. This one is screaming for (re)reissue. Quote
brownie Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 Another Revelation album Anthony Ortega's New Dance was also reissued on Hat Art! Quote

JSngry Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 Another Revelation album Anthony Ortega's New Dance was also reissued on Hat Art! Yeah, the Hat group seems to currently have whatever inside track there is to be had on the Revelation catalog, having also reissued Warne's NE PLUS ULTRA. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 West Coast Hot is a compilation of material from 2 Bradford/Carter lps and one by Tapscott. These 3 lps were first issued on Flying Dutchman. Quote

mikeweil Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 The various LPs Clare Fischer recorded for Revelation may be available from his website - some great Gary Foster on them, too. Two of them were released on MPS in Europe. Fischer split his recording/releasing activities between MPS, Revelation, and Discovery at that time. Covering this stuff would be a worthy task for Mosaic - all the Fischer, Foster and Marsh stuff I have heard was excellent. Was there any other HatArt reissue except the Marsh and the Ortega? Quote
mikeweil Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 I know Ne Plus Ultra was supposed to be reissued on Hat, but did it actually happen yet? The Hat Hut CD I have dates from 1990! Quote

I know Ne Plus Ultra was supposed to be reissued on Hat, but did it actually happen yet? Not as far as I know. Hat's owner Werner X. Uehlinger told me last year his reissue program for 2005 includes Warne Marsh's Ne Plus Ultra. (edited to correct an error) Edited April 14, 2005 by J.A.W. Quote
Brandon Burke Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 Another Revelation album Anthony Ortega's New Dance was also reissued on Hat Art! Too bad they didn't keep the original artwork.... Quote
JSngry Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 Free-flung self expression?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! How do you not go for that? Quote
AmirBagachelles Posted April 15, 2005 Author Report Posted April 15, 2005 I picked up New Dance on my way home, I've been thrilling to it for the past hour. Wow, what a talent! Chuck, West Coast Hot only includes the entirety of Flight for Four, nothing from Self Determination Music. I think. I'll be trying out some more Ortega, thanks everyone. Quote
Eloe Omoe Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 West Coast Hot only includes the entirety of Flight for Four, nothing from Self Determination Music. I think. Unfortunately, the track "Domino" (7:57) from Flight for Four, has been omitted from the West Coast Hot Cd. And nothing from Self Determination Music, you're right. Luca Quote
AmirBagachelles Posted April 15, 2005 Author Report Posted April 15, 2005 I am going to burn to CD the two FDs and Secrets, its a small crime that these are not easily available (to put it mildly) to jazz listeners. Quote
