J Larsen Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 File this one under "request for totally random transit-strike related advice". I have a flight leaving from Laguardia absurdly early Thursday morning - 5:30AM. I'm downtown, three blocks from the corner of BWay/Houston. I booked a car 1.5 weeks ago, but now they say they don't have enough drivers to make all their appointments. My backup plan was to leave my apt at 4:00AM, walk up to Houston, and wait for a cab. A couple people tonight insisted that I would have to leave at 3:00AM. That made me a little paranoid, but not paranoid enough to actually want to leave my house at 3. What do you guys think? Quote

How about a hotel room close to the airport the night before? Quote
bertrand Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 I think the above posters have it right. I know it's a pain and an extra expense, but it seems like the wise choice in this case. In fact, you may already have trouble finding a room. Good luck, and enjoy your vacation once you get there! Bertrand. Quote

Brownian Motion Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 Weighing -in from Central PA.... I'd leave now. Quote
catesta Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 Spend the night in a hotel next to LGA. Take this advice if you can. I was at JFK yesterday morning and again this morning. At 5:00 AM the place was slammed with traffic (way more than normal). LGA is not going to be much better. Under the current circumstances, 3:00 AM is not early enough for a 5:30 AM flight. The TWU can go screw themselves. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 Have you considered leaving yesterday? Quote
AllenLowe Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 I would beam myself over to wherever you're going - I saw this on television once - Quote

J Larsen Posted December 21, 2005 Author Report Posted December 21, 2005 Right after that last post, the car service called to offer me a 3:00 am pickup - they say it was about an hour into LGA at that time last night, so I should be okay. Quote
catesta Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 Good luck. Just out of curiosity, is the rate going up? Quote
AllenLowe Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 and if they say they're taking you, instead, to some field in New Jersey - run like hell - Quote
Dan Gould Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 Not to derail the thread, but since the advice has poured forth, here's my situation: We're flying into LGA Thursday morning. Dad is driving in from CT to pick us up. What is traffic like on the roadways that don't actually go into New York, but lead there? That is, he takes the Merritt to the Hutch to the Whitestone Bridge, and on past Shea to LaGuardia (is that the BQE we get on from the bridge?). I spoke to him last night and he was unconcerned about how the strike might impact his drive. Me, I'm not so sure. What do you guys think? Quote

catesta Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 I wouild tell your dad to plan on leaving earlier than normal. Whitestone Br. should be fine going in that direction. One is always smart to stay off of the BQE. Quote

From what I can tell, the BQE has no traffic restrictions like four to a car from the Bridge past the airport, so that's good. Quote

7/4 Posted December 21, 2005 Report Posted December 21, 2005 Yep. It's only Manhattan and only until 11:00 AM. Until now, I thought it was 24/7. I'd suggest taking public transportation, but with the strike I'm sure that's congested too. Quote

Then we could as see you whine like a fool about a non-jazz posting in the miscellaneous - non-political forum and criticise me for making a posting in the middle of the night when I can't sleep. There's still evidence here. Now go enjoy life Brownie! Get on with it! Quote

To quote myself: 7/4 finally has admitted killing the thread. Not because one of of my answers ('a bit weird' ) but because the whole thread made him look like a whining idiot! In his initial reply to my prodding for an answer, he gave a good description of a stalker, a subject he obviously knows a lot about. Except he switched roles, a classic transfer! If there's a stalker around here, you're the one! And others are finding out now! I'll go back and ignore you and enjoy my life and leave you to your pathetic one! Up, over and out, as they say!
