Yeah, this is typical Earland so I think you'll find him doing that thang. . . I haven't noticed it, but it's not something that I notice him doing, it doesn't annoy me. Quote
Noj Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Here's the review on AMG: "Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine The title of Say It Loud! is taken from James Brown's anthem "Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud," the R&B/funk classic that Lou Donaldson covers on this album. Instead of providing a thematic and musical touchstone for the rest of the record, the song is an attempt to prove that Donaldson is still on top of musical trends, but the lazy groove he and his band — trumpeter Blue Mitchell, guitarist Jimmy Ponder, organist Charles Earland, drummer Leo Morris — work up shows they're not quite comfortable with this contemporary funk. They sound much more at ease with standards like "Summertime" and "Caravan," which give them a chance to stretch out, even if they are arranged like commercially oriented soul-jazz. Nevertheless, their simple presence on the album puts the stiffness of Donaldson's groove-oriented soul-jazz in sharper relief. Midnight Creeper was a successful soul-jazz record because the group managed to hit the right tone and groove, but here his group sounds awkward and uneasy. There are a few good moments scattered throughout the album, particularly by Mitchell, but overall, Say It Loud! is one of the weakest records in Donaldson's catalog." I have and enjoy this disc, but I agree with this guy that "Summertime" and "Caravan" are the strongest tracks. Quote

The title track is the weakest, and it ain't that bad, by god! Water are doing a good job with Blue Notes that the powers that be in EMI don't give a toss about, in my view. "Brown Sugar" and "The Phantom" are both terrific releases they've done recently. Are there any other's (that I should be getting)? MG Quote

I've got the Wright on LP; that's very good indeed; Gloria Coleperson is one of my favourite organists. Glad that's come out on CD. Never heard the Byard Lancaster. Wasn't he on one of the Larry Young Blue Notes? - the Young LPs are buried behind a pile at present, so I can't look it up. I didn't like the Gale LPs when they came out. Had the same feeling about them as Bobby Hutcherson's "Now" - got that one a few months ago and decided I was right in 1970. Can't win 'em all. The Vortex I really want is the Clifford Jordan, "Soul Fountain", with John Patton. Anyone seen if this is coming out? Does Water have a website yet? MG Quote

Sold my LP original at a profit sometime back and was going to get the reissue til I noticed that Water neglected to add the unissued (not rejected) outtake ("Red Top"). As James Brown covers go "Say It Loud" is neither the best (that would be GG "Ain't It Funky Now") nor the worst on BN or elsewhere. There's more than enough JB covers on BN for a full CD, esp'ly if they ignore the erroneous composer credits and include Lonnie Smith's "I Can't Stand It" and the unissued GG "Let Yourself Go" from 5/29/70. Maybe someone should get Lou & Maceo (and/or Pee Wee and/or Fred) together on a date? Edited January 9, 2006 by danasgoodstuff Quote
