Matthew Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 All except the officially released tunes were up on dime a few months ago... so it definitely *is* crazy. Selling boots for such prizes on Ebay is something I find quite a bit more annoying than sharing this stuff... but as long as there are people willing to pay these prizes, why not... ← For the true completist, someone put Vigotone's "Jewels and Binoculars" up on dime within the past year or so - a mind-boggling 26 CDs represented to be all extant live Dylan recordings from 1966! This one's gotta rank up there with Benedetti's Bird recordings for sheer obsessiveness. ← And that Jewels and Binoculars went for over $700. Ah, to have that kind of free cash on hand.... Quote
ASNL77 Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 Now this is stupid... otherwise, could someone explain it? Basie Clef/Verve box ---> ebay: 147 USD MosaicRecords website ---> 136 USD ← Seller and buyer are in the UK, so shipping will be less expensive than what Mosaic charges on overseas orders (at least $20 if I remember well). And there is no risk of having customs tax added. ← Talking about taxes, I have recently had to pay hefty amounts of money for items coming from the US and entering the UK. Is it better to ask ebay sellers to declare items as 'gifts' or 'goods'? When do customs start charging you? $50, $70, $100 or more? Quote
Claude Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 (edited) Shopping on the internet (UK customs) My recommendations: The trick with Ebay items is for the seller to declare them as "used CDs" and indicate a low but reasonable value ($5-10/CD), so not to be over the limit for which taxes are due. Of course the customs can always require the buyer to provide for proof of the value, such as a printout copy of the auction. But if the value indicated on the package is plausible they will not insist. Sometimes commercial operators charge an excessive service fee (20 Euro) for doing the customs formalities. Because they make money with the formalities, they will make sure the goods are declared. Better avoid them and ship with US postal air mail. Edited October 17, 2005 by Claude Quote

sidewinder Posted October 19, 2005 Report Posted October 19, 2005 Sounds like a pretty likely candidate. Doesn't he live in Edinburgh? Review copies, I guess.. Quote
Tony Pusey Posted October 19, 2005 Report Posted October 19, 2005 Dont wish to nit pick Sidewinder, but unlikly to be reveiw copies cos the Penguin Guide does not review Mosaic sets. Quote
sidewinder Posted October 19, 2005 Report Posted October 19, 2005 True ! I think they have listed in the past the Dean Benedetti Parker ( ) and given it 4 stars ( ) and there's also a short para on who Mosaic are in the intro section. Doesn't Brian Morton also review CDs for the 'Jazz Review' though? Quote
Tony Pusey Posted October 19, 2005 Report Posted October 19, 2005 By Jove Sidewinder you are correct! Quote
ep1str0phy Posted October 23, 2005 Report Posted October 23, 2005 (edited) The Larry Young devaluation continues: $200 ← For those who care: I just saw the complete Young Mosaic contents (CD's, sans-box) for $52 or so dollars ($26.00 for 3 CD's) over at the Amoeba in Berkeley. I have most of it, so I'll hold off. Edited October 23, 2005 by ep1str0phy Quote

Uncle Skid Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 The Larry Young devaluation continues: $200 ← Looks like prices for the Andrew Hill set are coming down, too: $193. A second Hill set sold for $255 a few days later, so maybe somebody just got lucky to score it for less than $200. Regardless of price, great music! I wonder if the price drop has anything to do with the recent re-releases of Judgment and Andrew? Or maybe not, as I recall seeing the Grant Green Mosaic selling for huge amounts of $, and I was under the impression that most (if not all) of the material on that set was easily available. Quote

Aggie87 Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 ok...not a box set, but I'm just starting to look for the two News For Lulu discs. Is this a representative price that this is going for?? News For Lulu Quote
gnhrtg Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 ok...not a box set, but I'm just starting to look for the two News For Lulu discs. Is this a representative price that this is going for?? News For Lulu ← I finally got myself a copy of this (less than a year ago) for 7.70 euros. Though I'd say I got mine for a very good price, $85 seems to me to be very high. In general, I'd be willing to pay up to $30 for oop Hat's I'm really interested in - this, as the going price for Hat's in brick-and-mortars here is 23 euros ($27). Quote
Craig23 Posted November 5, 2005 Report Posted November 5, 2005 I got an email from Hat Hut three years ago saying that News for Lulu and More News For Lulu were hopefully going to be released within the year. Of course, now it is about two years late. Still wouldn't pay $80 dollars for one (or both) of them. Still have a copy of the email: >Date: Mon, 03 Feb 2003 14:41:14 +0100 >These two recordings will come back as a two CD-set >hopefully this year. >Our website will give the advance information about and >others too. > >Best regards, >-- >Werner X. ASNL77 Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 (edited) It seems to me that prices of Mosaic sets have gone done significantly in the past two months. Even sets such as the Larry Young, Mc Lean, Art Blakey, Andrew Hill, Shorty Rogers, Phil Woods, Maynard Ferguson etc are selling for much less than they used to a few months ago! Any idea why? Even sets such as the Larry Young, Mc Lean, Art Blakey, Andrew Hill, Shorty Rogers, Phil Woods, Maynard Ferguson etc are selling for much less than they used to a few months ago! Any idea why? ← Well, when the price goes up there are more sellers trying to sell ... Since the most eager buyers have already bought the sets at higher prices, the latecomers are entering the market filled with savvy bargain shoppers. Price on Mosaic sets has been steady for several years ... $30-$40 per disc for OOP sets; $15-20 off retail for in-print sets. If the current price is down a bit, it'll pick up soon enough. Quote

sidewinder Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 Definitely 2CD (just checked). Disk 1 'Cassandranite'. Disk 2 'Love Dance'. It was around $20 when it came out (or thereabouts). GREAT collection. As is the other Woody double ('Two More Pieces of the Puzzle'). Quote
