bertrand Posted May 15, 2006 Report Posted May 15, 2006 Frank, Any chance you'll hit the D.C. area? Bertrand. Quote
fkimbrough Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 Hi Bertrand - no plans at present, but we're working on it. Thanks very much for your interest - if you know of a venue I should check out, please let me know.........All best, FK Quote
sal Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 I will be getting this one for sure. Love Frank's playing! Frank, any plans on returning to the Green Mill? Maybe you can talk Paul Motian into coming with! Quote
fkimbrough Posted May 20, 2006 Report Posted May 20, 2006 Hey Sal - thanks for the positive thoughts......I'd love to come back to the Green Mill. Though I've never played there with a trio, every time I've been there has been a blast. Last time it snowed like crazy - at the end of the night, we were all looking for Dave (the owner) and couldn't find him....upon further examination we found him in the parking lot.....shoveling out his employees' cars! I don't think you'll find any clubowners in NYC showing that kind of love. Hope to see you soon - if you stop by the Green Mill, give 'em all my best. In the meantime, I'll try to give them a call and set something up. Quote
marcello Posted May 20, 2006 Report Posted May 20, 2006 Frank, I just put my order in for Play from CD Universe via this site. I know it will be one to stay on my playlist for many moons. Tom Quote
LWayne Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 Great CD, one the impresses more with repeated listenings. One of the best releases of the year so far IMHO. LWayne Quote
RonF Posted May 30, 2006 Report Posted May 30, 2006 Definitely one of the best this year. Terrific album, Frank. Wonderful to hear the Motian collaboration. Masa Kamaguchi is amazing, too. Quote
ghost of miles Posted May 30, 2006 Author Report Posted May 30, 2006 Yep, another winner--have been playing cuts off it and will do a full-fledged feature on Afterglow very soon. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted May 30, 2006 Report Posted May 30, 2006 Frank, try the Blues Alley as a venue in DC. Good luck with the new CD! Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 19, 2006 Author Report Posted June 19, 2006 Listened to this again over the weekend, as I'm preparing to tape the July 7 Afterglow which will feature it--and, barring a slew of magnificent KIND OF BLUE-type masterpieces over the next six months, this definitely goes on my top 10 list for 2006. Great CD; congratulations, Frank! Quote
GA Russell Posted June 19, 2006 Report Posted June 19, 2006 Frank, I read Owen Cordle's rave review of this in yesterday's News & Observer. Congrats! Quote
skeith Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 I picked this cd up last week and I am really enjoying it. Congratulations Frank Kimbrough!! Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 5, 2006 Author Report Posted July 5, 2006 I'll be featuring this this coming Friday night on Afterglow, playing the bulk of it during the second hour of the program (from 11 p.m. EST to midnight)--two sets of FK with a set of Ellington's 1943 Hurricane Pastel Period broadcasts in the middle. Will up again with broadcast & archive links on Friday. Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 10, 2006 Author Report Posted July 10, 2006 "Frank Kimbrough's PLAY + Duke Ellington's Pastel Period 1943 broadcast" is now archived on the Afterglow website. It's all in Hour 2 of the program, although there are a couple of performances by Kimbrough & his wife in the first hour as well. Quote
fkimbrough Posted July 10, 2006 Report Posted July 10, 2006 (edited) Hi David - many thanks for the feature, and many thanks to those of you who have posted positive comments about the CD here. Much appreciated! BTW, Palmetto has a brand new website, and their entire catalog of CDs is now available for purchase or download(s) - the URL is the same as before - www.palmetto-records.com. Lazaro Vega Posted July 13, 2006 Report Posted July 13, 2006 Playing music by Ron Horton tonight on Jazz From Blue Lake -- he generously sent me his Fresh Sounds releases, both featuring F.K. on the G.P. -- and weaving "Play" into the mix, as well as Herbie Nichols and Andrew Hill's music. Santanhar is outside my geographic experience, but this music named for what happened there is beautifully particulate, light shining in beams with dust motes passing through still air. Quote
fkimbrough Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 "with dust motes passing through still air".........indeed - Lazaro, how did you know we were in a one-star hotel? I wrote this in Santander, Spain, where I was on tour with Ben Allison's Medicine Wheel. When we arrived for the sound check, there was a digital piano on the stage - when I inquired about it and mentioned that the contract specifically called for a grand piano, the promoter pushed a button, and "grand piano" came up on the screen - I informed him that I would be back at the hotel, and when he got a piano, to let me know, and I'd be right over. Needless to say, I sat alone in my hotel room for two nights writing that song and doing quite a few NY Times Sunday crossword puzzles........ thanks for playing my music, and Ron's - much appreciated! Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 I look forward to the day I can ditch a gig because they don't have a grand piano (Seriously - not being sarcastic!) Quote
BFrank Posted July 21, 2006 Report Posted July 21, 2006 FWIW, this was just added to eMusic along with Ben Allison, Larry Goldings and a few others on Palmetto. Quote
jfz Posted July 28, 2006 Report Posted July 28, 2006 Frank - Are you coming to the Boston/New England area with your trio? Thanks-John Quote

Bright Moments Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 FINALLY brought this one off the "to listen to" pile! EXCELLENT!!! time to check out some of his other cds! Quote
sal Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 Finally picked this up and am giving it a first listen. Its really excellent thus far. The interplay between the trio is really nice. Its a totally different vibe than when he plays with the guys from Jazz Composers Collective. The pairing of Paul Motian with Frank makes very good sense. Quote
jazz1 Posted February 6, 2007 Report Posted February 6, 2007 jfz and BFrank - thanks for the posts - glad to know it's now at emusic........jfz - no plans as yet for New England, but we're working on it...............
