clifford_thornton Posted July 8, 2006 Report Posted July 8, 2006 My Hank tastes were stoked by A Caddy For Daddy today, and I set aside a copy of Reach Out! at the record store. Had to put a bunch on hold today - lots of good used BNs and Time jazz dates! Quote
kenny weir Posted July 8, 2006 Report Posted July 8, 2006 Ahhhh - Hank Mobley, my second favourite clarinet player after Kenny Burrell! Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted July 8, 2006 Report Posted July 8, 2006 does anyone know where hank is buried. is it in philly? i want to visit hank and play the saxophone on his grave OMG THAT WOULD BE SO KICKASS! ESPECIALLY IF YOU WOKE UP A ZOMBIE HANK MOBLEY AND HE CAME BURSTING UP OUT OF HIS GRAVE AND ATE YOUR BRAIN. HE MIGHT NEED SOMETHING ELSE TO EAT AFTER THAT, THOUGH... Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted July 8, 2006 Author Report Posted July 8, 2006 u got it all backwards Jimmy-Jimmy-Cocca-Puff- the point is not to ressurect Mobley or exhume him like those drunk rednecks did with Ronnie Van Zant last year. But u wouldnt have every mobley album so you wouldn't know what 2 think- tee hee. Quote
bertrand Posted July 8, 2006 Report Posted July 8, 2006 Chuck, I've always wondered about Hank's stay in Chicago. The liner notes to one of the Blue Notes even mention some compositions that Muhal's group would have played. I've never found any copyrights after The Flip, however. Do you remember what type of repertoire they played on those gigs? Standards or Mobley originals? Thanks, Bertrand. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted July 8, 2006 Author Report Posted July 8, 2006 what you mean hank never copywrighted any of the THINKING OF HOME lp from 1970? why didnt he do that. and yes that is true hank wrote ensemble compositions for M.R.A. his orch., what was it called again the S.Q.P.F.T, or the something AECM? AACM? THE AACM?? yea yea yea anyways i'll take another listen tonite but i remember it is nothing like Slice of the Top- its like immagine if Hank co wrote Slice w/ like slice piano player mccoy tyner or something Quote

andybleaden Posted July 8, 2006 Report Posted July 8, 2006 I would rather think about his music My favourite piece of his right now would have to be A Slice of the Top Gets my foot tappin everytime Quote
JSngry Posted July 8, 2006 Report Posted July 8, 2006 I'm thinking that McCoy could get a whole new audience by changing his name to Slice Tyner. Quote
BruceH Posted July 11, 2006 Report Posted July 11, 2006 I actually didn't know it was Hank's birthday but just happened to play Dippin'. Nice. Quote

Man with the Golden Arm Posted July 14, 2006 Report Posted July 14, 2006 chewy ... as I sit here listening to NoRoomForSquares, can you please tell me if Hank based the intro and outro riff on "Old World, New Imports" on the theme from The Flintstones? or was it the other way 'round? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 14, 2006 Report Posted July 14, 2006 Chuck, I've always wondered about Hank's stay in Chicago. The liner notes to one of the Blue Notes even mention some compositions that Muhal's group would have played. I've never found any copyrights after The Flip, however. Do you remember what type of repertoire they played on those gigs? Standards or Mobley originals? Thanks, Bertrand. I suggest you PM John Litweiler. He did a piece on Hank for DB at the time and knows better than I. Quote

JSngry Posted July 14, 2006 Report Posted July 14, 2006 I just played Dippin' backwards and kept hearing this weird voice saying "I buried Hank". Is it possible that Hank is dead? Are there clues on any of the other albums? Hmmm..... Quote

kh1958 Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 I listened to Hank this morning--on Art Blakey's Meet You at the Jazz Corner of the World vol. 1, Liberty era (blue label) LP (but with RVG in wax)--it sounded mighty good, Hank included, though I was more enthralled by Lee Morgan on this one.
