JSngry Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 Mr. McKee's in Denton this week doing a jazz camp and had last night off. So we hooked up for a hang. LTB worked her usual magic, and a splendid time was had by all. God bless LTB! Paul's that rare combination of true gentleman & "seasoned warrior" who sees through all the bullshit. Totally realistic without being bitter and ugly about it. Totally a class act, he is, and it was a rare pleasure to spend the evening in his company. Invite him into your home with confidence! The Quartet Outsters were, well, Quartet Out. Whatcha' gonna do 'bout that? Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 Nothing. FFA told me in the chatroom he was hanging with the Sangry's. Must be fun! Quote
JSngry Posted July 19, 2006 Author Report Posted July 19, 2006 It was fun! Pete & Paul know each otehr from the Woody band, so they hit the ground running. It was all groovy from the git-go. But I'll tell you what - w/o LTB, it would've been just a "guy hang", and all that that implies. Homegirl put ont he pots (and the coals!) in a major way, and made it look effortless. Quote
Noj Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 Glad to hear it was a good time! I wish I could have joined you. Did y'all listen to any tunes? Did you jam together? What was on the menu? Quote
slide_advantage_redoux Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 (edited) I am sad that I couldn't make the hang. I know Paul from a couple midwest big band camps we taught together on in the late 90's. He is a great hang and a helluva musician! Edited July 19, 2006 by slide_advantage_redoux Quote

JSngry Posted July 19, 2006 Author Report Posted July 19, 2006 Played some different stuff, mostly for background to conversation. No jamming. This time. Grilled pork tenderloin (medium rare), pasta w/asparagus & pine nuts, a salad of field greens, orange slices, roasted walnuts, and blue cheese w/a raspberry vinagrette dressing, an avocado bruschetta thing, fresh melon assortment, and chocolate dipped strawberries. And beer. Of course. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 And beer. Of course. Beer! Free's a strict Rum & Coke man. Quote

Peter Johnson Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 Jim--you've been using the term for so long now, and I'm dense and haven't figured it out. "LTB" = ??? I'm fairly certain you're not referring to a vintage Ford with dubious styling characteristics! Somehow I knew Sangrey dines with the same refined taste with which he listens! My listening tastes I can take credit for. The credit for the dining goes entirely to LTB. Quote
JSngry Posted July 19, 2006 Author Report Posted July 19, 2006 Sorry. Started using it a long while back, and it's become second nature. LTB=The Lovely & Talented Brenda, my truly lovely & truly talented wife. She's the love of my life. Quote

Big Al Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 Pete was in one of Woody's bands? Learn something new every day around here! Thanks for sharing. Sounds like it was a blast! Quote
Free For All Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 It was a hang! It was the first time I'd met Jim, but I felt like we were already old friends....so I borrowed some money from him (not really) . LTB took very good care of us- she's as phenomenal as you would expect. She's apparently unperturbed by gatherings of aging jazz cats. The food was sublime. The Sangreys really did it up. Sangrey is as charming in person as he is here. The Quartet Out guys were immediately accommodating and made me feel right at home. Regarding Sangrey's music collection, what can I tell you? It was as awesome as I expected it to be. It's gradually expanding on the walls like a ivy on a house. I hope to cross paths with many more of you board members soon! Thanks, Jim and Brenda! And thanks for your kind words folks! I needed that right now! Quote
slide_advantage_redoux Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 It was nice talking to you on the phone Paul. I wish circumstances were such that evening that I could have made it by the hang. Jim's parties are always memorable. Intimate is how I would describe any soiree he hosts! The conversation, food and music is always top shelf. I hope that things sort out for you well in the immediate future. We should get together for the future jazz camp we briefly discussed. I think it is a viable project worth considering. Quote
