1. The Honorary Funny Rat Forum - the place to discuss the various topics within the already popular "Funny Rat" thread, so that they might have threads of their own

2. The Big O Book Club - talk about your favorite books, so that individual books within the also-popular "What Are You Reading?" thread might have threads of their own.

Whattya think?

Funny Rat forum I can see, since this seems to be the single thread that attracts all of the out or semi-out (or maybe I should just say "diametrically opposed to the Wynton-Crouch vision of jazz) music that obviously has a following.

Book Club I don't see, threads about favorite books can be created separately and don't really need their own forum.

When one individual thread gets THAT long -- a separate forum might well be in order. Otherwise that one thread might continue to grow and grow and grow -- and who knows how long threads can really get???

So then, how does this sound??

1) create a separate Funny Rat forum (with an appropriate forum description sub-heading)

2) move the existing Funny Rat thread to the new forum

3) lock it -- yes, lock the oroginal Funny Rat thread (cuz, sheesh, how damn long can one thread get??!!!)

4) pin it (so it doesn't drift down into nothingness, never to be seen again).

5) and rename it "The original thread that begat an entire forum!!" -- or something like that.

Micromanager Rooster T. -- signing off :P

It's difficult to dive in the funny rat thread at times, like taking a sip from a fire hydrant.

But couldn't these artists/releases be discussed in the "Artists", "New Releases" and "Recommendations" forums? Seems like a forum for this specific music would be sort of redundant (?).

Good arguments probably to be made on both sides of this case.

Perhaps once Jim has weighed in with his opinion (which, let's face it, counts a wee bit more than any of the rest of us :) ), then maybe he'll decide to start a poll to see what the general consensus is.

It's not like this hasn't come up before...

The "funny rat thread" is into "inbreeding" and is of little interest to regular humans. :)

ha!

Indeed all of this has been discussed before... my take: those in that thread enjoy it, everyone is welcome to join, by using search > show posts it's easy to find something specific, too.

The new threads usually don't work, Erik. The "rat" has a long attention span, so if someone mentions a disc and I get it two years later, I can still reply to that first mention in the rat, while reviving another of those two-post-threads may end up in that thread growing to four posts before vanishing again...

I enjoy the Rat thread as it is, actually too. And I can understand your point about the small "two post threads" as well, Flurin. I didn't really see the value in creating a whole new forum for a specific music category (if you can consider the music discussed in Funny Rat to be a specific style), that was really my main point, I suppose. If we did that should we create forums for "bebop", "hardbop", "dixieland", etc., which really becomes more about labelling the music instead of simply enjoying it. And there are too many things which aren't easily labelled (which is fine!).

It seems right to me to let a thread about freer music be free to grow & continue on as it is, rather than cut up into wee pieces in its own compartmentalized forum. If someone has trouble finding out about a title because the name doesn't lend itself to searching, then post the query under artist or recommendations and as one would with any other type of music.
