Big Al Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 I got no real records to play!!! I have a total of six jazz LPs. The rest are rock & roll! And my Styx records. I gotta fix this. I'll be haunting the Half-Price Books stores around here, but I tell ya I'm gettin' burned out always seeing Boots Randolph/Herb Alpert/Kenny G/Spyro Gyra LPs alla time. Just needed to vent. Anyone wishing to make vinyl donations my way can PM me. Quote
GregK Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 those Mosaic Miles Davis sets are mostly still available. And check out what Classic Records is doing-some great reissues of Blue Note LPs. And if you are not totally swearing off rock and roll, they have been handling the recent Neil Young output on LP, and they sound great! Quote
rostasi Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 Big Al, You're always welcome to borrow from my store. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 I think Dan Gould might be willing to part with his Globe Unity originals. Quote
Eric Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 (edited) I have always been pleasantly surprised with the quality of the Fantasy/OJC lps. Should generally be easy enough to find and the price is right. Someone has also been pressing up a bunch of Blue Note titles that are priced around $10. Quality seems fine there too. You can go the ebay route, but be careful. Even guys that have a 99% rating seem to be unable to grade correctly. Of course The Bastardsâ„¢ carry quite a bit of vinyl. And go back and listen to some of that rock!!! Edited August 19, 2006 by Eric Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 And go back and listen to some of that rock!!! And Styx, too! Quote
JSngry Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 Dude - get otta South Arlington & hit the HPs in Dallas (but not Mesquite). I usually score something good, and since you don't have that much vinyl right now, your odds go up considerably. Hit the main store on NW Highway first, and look in all the categories. Of course, there's plenty of Goodwill stores (including a bigass one is S. Arlington, iirc), and if you're looking for Brother Dave Gardner LPs, hey, that's the ticket. But sometimes.... And yeah, Dusty Groove carries vinyl, new and used. Just be careful of anything used that's rated lower than VG+ (and even then if it's a "hot ticket" item that seems reasonably priced). If the rating is lower than VG+, and the prices is less than the cost of a full-sized fast food meal, then it's probably worht a shot just to get a play copy. Otherwise... Of course, now that you're consciously looking for vinyl, anytime you travel, plan your meal breaks (times & locations) around used record stores. It's a good way to "walk off" the meal. Quote
wolff Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 (edited) WTF is a rekkid? If it is something half way decent I'll shoot some jazz LP's your way. I'd recommend the Mosaic Miles sets, but they probably cost more than your entire stereo. Correct me if I'm wrong. 6 jazz LP's.LMAO... I'm glad you have your Styx LP's, as I never bought any. And, those that were given to me(20+), were in the next days trash. It's tough finding jazz vinyl at Half Price Books these days. I do not even bother. Try Cadence. Try eBay, for some 2.99+ LP's to stock up your collection. These days, I like eBay for the non-collectable stuff(under $10). Tons and tons for under a tenner. Hell, you can get a few original BN's for a song if you know what you are doing. Paul Secor should have some very nice affordable LP's up for grabs some time soon(I love Classic's mono Atomic Basie, BTW). Pick up a few $10 OJC's. I think a thread addressed to "Big Al getting some jazz vinyl" is in order!!! Edited August 20, 2006 by wolff Quote

JSngry Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 (edited) It's tough finding jazz vinyl at Half Price Books these days. Where do you live? Here in the DFW area, it's not tough at all. Not nearly as easy as it used to be, granted, but if you seek, you can still definitely find. Hell, last time out, I found the Bud Freeman Stere*O*Craft side in nice condition for $7.98. I've also found buttloads of Brazillian (as in from Brazil) LPs for $3.98 each, or something like that. Like I said, I usally find something of merit. It runs in cycles, sure, and if you're only looking for a certain niche of product like 1st pressing BNs or something, yeah, that stuff is not going to be there. But otherwise, there's still plenty of stuff out there on the shelves, at least around here. Edited August 20, 2006 by JSngry Quote

JSngry Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 (edited) Well, you gotta remember - I've been shopping at HP since the mid-1970s, back when you could really clean up. (and I did...) Those days are long gone. But there's still fun to be had. We've sort of instititued an irregular series of "Half Price Sundays" in our family. We pick a different store each time out (and in the metroplex, there's plenty from which to choose), and plan a family outing around it. I go look for music, LTB looks for cookbooks, & Kristina looks for anime stuff (seems like they're getting to be quite a good source for that, too). Charlie stays home or goes to work. He's at that age. We'll eat lunch in the area, then hit the HP and any other "interesting" looking shops in the immediate vicinity, and then head home. Almost always, everybody buys something. It's a fun way to spend a few hours w/the family on a Sunday . Edited August 20, 2006 by JSngry Quote
rostasi Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 The NW Hwy location is just down the street and I've found lots of good (and cheeeeeeep!) stuff. You can easily get lost in there. Recycled Books in the square in Denton was a good place too, but it's been a while since I've been. Quote
JSngry Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 Recycled Books in the square in Denton was a good place too, but it's been a while since I've been. I find the vinyl there to be priced higher than I usually care to pay. But the selection is always interesting. Their CD selection & pricing, otoh, is dangerous. I never get out of there for under $150.00, and that gets me two or more bags full of CDs. Quote
rostasi Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 In the old days, jazz students from around the world would sometimes sell their precious cargo there and you'd find some great stuff! Maybe this is the same with CDs now? Quote

rostasi Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 Now that the costs in tuition have skyrocketed this year, that may change. Quote
Big Al Posted October 1, 2006 Author Report Posted October 1, 2006 Just got back from the big Half-Price Books on Northwest Highway, and if I wanna stay within striking distance of financial solvency, I will never go in there again! It's just too damn dangerous, 'specially since I got that blasted rekkid player! Tonight's haul: Kenny Burrell: All Day Long and All Night Long (Prestige 2-fer) Hubert Laws: Morning Star Charles Lloyd: Of Course, Of Course (MONO baby!!!) Fats Waller: Complete Volume 1, 1934-35 A Bill Cosby record And this was AFTER I had put back the following: Some Milestone Ben Webster two-fer of recordings he did overseas in '69 The infamous "Marquis de Sade" LP by Lalo Schifrin which I was gonna try & eBay Jackie McLean's HIPNOSIS Horace Parlan/Booker Ervin BACK FROM THE GIG And that's not even to mention the Jackie McLean Steeplechases and various Blue Note LPs (re-releases from the late 60's/early 70's, based on the look of the labels, those Liberty-style labels. But still......) Naturally, a HPB Gift Certificate has shot to the top of my Christmas Wish List! Quote

Hot Ptah Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 The Music Exchange in Kansas City has about 1 million vinyl LPs that they hope to somehow get rid of. They were going to reopen this fall, but the sudden accidental death of owner Ron Rooks has put an end to those plans. The 1 millon plus LPs are in a warehouse in the West Bottoms section of Kansas City. You could get a phenomenal jazz LP collection probably pretty cheap, before someone else comes in and buys the whole thing from Ron Rooks' widow. Quote
