JSngry Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 Miles Davis – Live Recordings 1948-1957 I had a little less of this material than originally thought, and at the BRO price, the result of that particular inventory query made the purchase a value-positive as a listening archive investment. brownie Posted September 18, 2012 Report Posted September 18, 2012 The Complete Jimmie Lunceford 1939-1940 (CBS France), LPs 1 then 2 Superb 4LPs set from 1981 with 8 alternate takes and one unissued title. Too bad it has not been rerelased! Quote
king ubu Posted September 21, 2012 Report Posted September 21, 2012 Just got this one, finally ... any news on further volumes, Allen? I'm only four or five tracks, but most intrigued already! Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 Again - love this set! Good but not of the quality of the Black Lion dates and much of the SteepleChase material. The Columbia stuff traces the end. Quote
John Tapscott Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 Again - love this set! Good but not of the quality of the Black Lion dates and much of the SteepleChase material. The Columbia stuff traces the end. I know, but I still like it a lot. My favorite Dexter albums are actually "The Apartment" on Steeplechase and "Our Man in Paris" on Blue Note. Quote
JohnS Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 Disc one and two today. Remainder tomorrow. Great set Quote
romualdo Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 the 17 minute version of "Flying Home" is a real gas Quote

colinmce Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 Jazz Piano: A Smithsonian Collection (Smithsonian), Disc 2 I really can't recommend this one enough. The discs are split roughly into 1: early jazz & stride, 2: swing to bop, 3: bebop, 4: postbop. Mary Lou Williams, Art Tatum, Ellington, Jess Stacy, Nat King Cole, Erroll Garner, Jimmy Jones, and Bud Powell on this volume. The material is easy enough to find elsewhere, but as a listening experience this is well worth tracking down. As with most Smithsonian box sets, it's absurdly cheap secondhand. I got mine for about $10. Four CDs in a handsome 12x12 box with a thick booklet of annotations by Dick Katz Quote
T.D. Posted September 28, 2012 Report Posted September 28, 2012 Over the past few days. Most excellent set IMO... Quote
