I am not too sure where to start and where to get them from. Hiroshi is brilliant but price of shipping for LPs will undoubtedly be very high. Is 'Early records' the cheapest option? Any other suggestion? Could our vinyl specialists also tell me which Blue Note reissues sound best? Are Toshiba and King the best Thanks. I ended up with original US pressings, (I couldn't resist after a couple of NY original pressings ) and Classic reissues when the originals are too pricey. BN Mosaic Lp sets are a good option: pricey but with nice sound and cheaper then collecting all the original pressings, expecially with 1500 series. (Mobley and Morgan). My two cents. I am very likely to go the King or the Toshiba route as I don't feel like spending a fortune on originals. When I see how much they go for on Ebay, it makes me I have all the BN Mosaic LP sets ( apart from the Lee Morgan set) and they really sound great especially the Hank Mobley and the Don Cherry. I will be mainly looking for some Freddie Hubbard, Lou Donaldson, Horace Silver, Kenny Dorham, Lee Morgan, Stanley Turrentine and the Grant Green albums that are not on the Mosaic set. Well, NY and Liberty pressing, stereo, are not always such expensive, I found lots of them for far less then 100 bucks. That could be a serious amount of money for a single record, but well below the ebay crazyness of the last times. In term of sound quality and condition, Hiroshi is a safe choice, if you don't want the hassle of misgraded condition of the US pressing. The Riverside reissues from Japan are another story. I refer to the Japanese Riversides which came out in the 70s. Must say I have been disappointed too often with the thin sound of a number of Riverside originals as far as dynamics are concerned! I've a number of 1970s Japanese Riverside/Prestige/New Jazz reissues all seem very good pressings but are ultimately only as good as the master tapes, which in Riverside's case weren't always that great. Have had superb luck with the BNs (King & Toshiba), which almost make the Classic reissues - at least some of them - sort of superfluous. Then again, Japanese pressings of things like Hank (where's Michel with those catalog #'s?) are still big-ticket, for whatever reason. I remember one day i was in a record shop in Paris, and each time the seller and some customers were talking about a Blue Note i was giving them the cat #. For me it was really a joke, but eventually i saw in their eyes that they were thinkig i was some kind of mental case...they looked at me with some curiosity... i must admit that it was very very funny to see their face... Originals often has a lot of 'punch', I would say 'unnatural' sometimes. In some case I prefer the Mosaic pressings. No experience with japanese pressings, not BN at least. I have some japanese pressings of classic rock, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, ecc.., usually I find them a little 'thin' in term of sound compared to original Uk, even compared to later reissues. six string Posted January 15, 2007 Report Share Posted January 15, 2007 (edited) Regarding Japanese pressings of Prestige material, I have a Saxophone Colossus from Japan that is advertised as from the JVC Cutting plant that sounds really great to me. I think I paid $20.00 for it, maybe less and seeing what the original is going for, I'll probably have to be happy with what I have. I usually buy Japanese pressings when I see them, if the U.S. pressings are hard to find or expensive. They may not sound as good as a DG pressing but at least the vinyl is very quiet. It can always be used as a temporary disc until the one you really want lands on your doorstep. I posted this on the wrong thread. Oh well....'scuse me.
