Blue Note LPs......

Recommended Posts

I have decided to progressively replace my BN mini LP CDs with LPs reissues. I am not too sure where to start and where to get them from. Hiroshi is brilliant but price of shipping for LPs will undoubtedly be very high. Is 'Early records' the cheapest option? Any other suggestion?

Could our vinyl specialists also tell me which Blue Note reissues sound best? Are Toshiba and King the best Thanks.

You could find some of the answears here

http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...l=sound+quality

The same questions I posed couple of here ago.

I ended up with original US pressings, (I couldn't resist after a couple of NY original pressings  ) and Classic reissues when the originals are too pricey. BN Mosaic Lp sets are a good option: pricey but with nice sound and cheaper then collecting all the original pressings, expecially with 1500 series. (Mobley and Morgan).

My two cents.

There are a lot of BN nuts over here. Just wait for the posts. Welcome to the club!

Ooops, I noted you already knew the old thread.

No problem Porcy. I knew this thread existed but I couldn't find it. I am very likely to go the King or the Toshiba route as I don't feel like spending a fortune on originals. When I see how much they go for on Ebay, it makes me :bad:

I have all the BN Mosaic LP sets ( apart from the Lee Morgan set) and they really sound great especially the Hank Mobley and the Don Cherry. I will be mainly looking for some Freddie Hubbard, Lou Donaldson, Horace Silver, Kenny Dorham, Lee Morgan, Stanley Turrentine and the Grant Green albums that are not on the Mosaic set.

Well, NY and Liberty pressing, stereo, are not always such expensive, I found lots of them for far less then 100 bucks. That could be a serious amount of money for a single record, but well below the ebay crazyness of the last times. In term of sound quality and condition, Hiroshi is a safe choice, if you don't want the hassle of misgraded condition of the US pressing.

.... thought here in this forum, you could find blue note sales, but that is very rare ...

but i can't think nobody has never ever a blue note record for sale ?!

but what i would like more is to trade some blue note records as i must not have all of them, but only the ones i really like

(of course wouldn't trade a liberty against 47west)

The Japanese reissues of Prestige albums have been excellent. Almost as good as the BN vinyls from King Japan.

The Riverside reissues from Japan are another story. I refer to the Japanese Riversides which came out in the 70s. Must say I have been disappointed too often with the thin sound of a number of Riverside originals as far as dynamics are concerned!

But the quality of the pressings of those Japanese vinyls is uniformly outstanding.

I've a number of 1970s Japanese Riverside/Prestige/New Jazz reissues all seem very good pressings but are ultimately only as good as the master tapes, which in Riverside's case weren't always that great. Most have a serial number beginning SMJ XXXX but I'm aware that there are other more recent series both from Victor and DIW of some of this material

Yeah, those Japanese Riversides aren't too hot. Have had superb luck with the BNs (King & Toshiba), which almost make the Classic reissues - at least some of them - sort of superfluous. Then again, Japanese pressings of things like Hank (where's Michel with those catalog #'s?) are still big-ticket, for whatever reason.

For some useless things i can have a good memory... I remember one day i was in a record shop in Paris, and each time the seller and some customers were talking about a Blue Note i was giving them the cat #. For me it was really a joke, but eventually i saw in their eyes that they were thinkig i was some kind of mental case...they looked at me with some curiosity... i must admit that it was very very funny to see their face...

Thanks to all of you. Between Classic reissues, King and Toshiba, which ones would you rather go for?

.... not the toshiba, i did collect them but sold almost all of them - now doin much better with most of the king issues

>> try to get some of the K18P - 9xxx series - superb sound quality, sometimes even better thjan the GXK or GXF series

never listen to the classic reissues, but some people say they would sound too cd-like (i do not know)

Not really cd-like, but if you want the 'punch' of the originals... :w

Originals often has a lot of 'punch', I would say 'unnatural' sometimes. In some case I prefer the Mosaic pressings. No experience with japanese pressings, not BN at least. I have some japanese pressings of classic rock, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, ecc.., usually I find them a little 'thin' in term of sound compared to original Uk, even compared to later reissues. No objections about japanese vinyl quality, always superb, the same level of the ECM vinyl.

Regarding Japanese pressings of Prestige material, I have a Saxophone Colossus from Japan that is advertised as from the JVC Cutting plant that sounds really great to me. I think I paid $20.00 for it, maybe less and seeing what the original is going for, I'll probably have to be happy with what I have. I usually buy Japanese pressings when I see them, if the U.S. pressings are hard to find or expensive. They may not sound as good as a DG pressing but at least the vinyl is very quiet. It can always be used as a temporary disc until the one you really want lands on your doorstep.

I posted this on the wrong thread. Oh well....'scuse me.

Wjat about Impulse reissues? Which ones would you recommend. I have seen a few MCA on Ebay recently. Are they any good? What about The Colubia Impulse reissues?

I can recommend the Japanese Impulse reissues (MCA) - I have a few of those from Mr Tanno and they sound great ! The domestic/US MCAs are from the 1970s/80s I think and tend to be not so great - I seem to recall that the ones from the 80s are DMM. UK 70s Impulses and Red/Black US second pressings are both worth having though.

Thanks Bob. More business for Mr Tanno then. My new hobby is going to cost me a fortune.I knew I shouldn't have started buying records!!
