brownie Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 Save the Country Saw this when it came out. Thought the whole thing was a bit out of my interests range and went my way without getting it. There were a lot of albums coming out around the time that I thought would be much more musically rewarding! Now shoot me if I was wrong Quote
DMP Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 One of several Pacific Jazz/World Pacific titles from that era that will probably never see the light of day - Ernie Watts, Bobby Bryant, Wilton Felder, Freddie Robinson, Groove Holmes, others I can't recall at the moment. (In the meantime, we did get a reissue of Chet Baker and the Mariachi Brass...) Quote

BFrank Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 I actually have this album, as well as everything he did for MPS/BASF. These were good albums and a creative time for George as he was also in FZ's band during this time. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted March 9, 2007 Author Report Posted March 9, 2007 DMP::: WHAT IS YOUR RATIONALE THAT CAPITOL/BN WILL NEVER REISSUE THOSE LPS? JUST CAUSE THEIR LATE PERIOD WORLD PACIFIC? ALL THE MORE AWESOME IF YOU ASK CHEWY. Quote
DMP Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 Chewy - I think these albums (which I enjoy and would love to have again, especially Bobby Bryant's "Earth Dance" and Ernie Watts "Planet Love") have pretty much been forgotten. And, as EMI is cutting back (and may wind up merging), don't think reisuing this stuff will be any kind of priority. And, while labels like Mighty Quinn occasionallty liscense EMI material, they usually concentrate on more "serious" fare. (A couple titles from this era once appeared on One Way.) Hey - maybe candidates for Mosaic Contemporary? Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted March 9, 2007 Author Report Posted March 9, 2007 i should give planet love another try-- i didnt get it cause he was just trying to be the west coast jazz coltrane, but i do like e.w Quote
BFrank Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 i should give planet love another try-- i didnt get it cause he was just trying to be the west coast jazz coltrane, but i do like e.w Oh, MAN.........I LOVE "Planet Love". Quote
mikeweil Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 I remember hearing a track from Planet Love on AFN Europe back then and being quite impressed, but I never saw that LP. I wonder why they didn't reissue it on CD when Watts was one of the most talked about saxophonists due to his studio work and Quartet West. I sure would have bought it. Quote
JSngry Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 PJ had a little bit of a "now sound" thing going on back then didn't they, what with the albums listed above + the Buddy Rich & Gerald Wilson sides, not to mention Craig Hundley. Nehrus and/or turtlenecks on the house! Quote
mikeweil Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 Craig Hundley - what a hype about a young talent. He was pretty good, but looked like the characters on the title page of Mad magazine ...... I bought his PJ LP for a buck but sold it pretty soon after, not enough substance. Well .... what became of him? Back to George Duke - weren't there Jean Luc Ponty sides on PJ with Duke as well? I remember hearing some nice tracks from them. I have a George Duke quartet LP on MPs recorded at that time (January 1966), with some David L. Simmons on bass trumpet - nice stuff. John Heard was on bass and sounded great, much better than with the pickup he started to use shortly after. There was a trio LP released next that I regrettably never found - right between this rather straighahead first outing and his later MPS LPs with Heard and Ndugu. Quote
mikeweil Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 The Inner Souce was the title of that second MPS - a double LP! It was reissued on LP in the 1980's - I can't understand why I didn't get me one! Quote
sidewinder Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 The Inner Souce was the title of that second MPS - a double LP! It was reissued on LP in the 1980's - I can't understand why I didn't get me one! Don't tell me about it ! I passed on most of them in the deletions racks at about £2 each. Only picked up the CBBB 'Live at Ronnie Scotts' though. 'Classic' MPS artwork with primed sticks of gelignite, high power neon signs etc. on the covers as I recall. Quote
DMP Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 The Ponty/Duke stuff has been out in the CD era - the original PJ album (a "live" date) was on "One Way" and a second album with pretty much the same group came out on "Blue Note." That King Kong album was also out for awhile, too. And Groove Holmes' "Welcome Home" has been out in Japan. (And the later Gerald Wilson shows up on the "Mosaic" box.) Now, where's Freddie Robinson's "The Coming Atlantis?" There's one cut on one of those "Blue Note" anthologies.... Quote
BFrank Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 I have vinyl of The Jean-Luc Ponty Experience with the George Duke Trio "Recorded in Hollywood at Thee Experience" on World Pacific Jazz. The "trio" being Heard and Berk. Quote
DMP Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 That's the one that was reissued on "One Way." Quote
