chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 the few times ive heard gary bartz play bebop, all i can think is, here is a man who knows his music and the saxophone on such a deep level, that it is just awe inspiring--i have heard a lot of the prestiges and all but i want you guys to give me some reccomendations along the more straight ahead lines-- what albums can i get w/ gary bartz on them? i NEVER see any in the store and i really dont know where to start w/ him. i might be able to get my hands on a copy of ODE TO SUPER but besides that, even including newer more modern albums-- what gary bartz would be easy for me to locate down. also if anyone wished to let me hear some live gary bartz i would be much interested... please assist any way shape or form, i REALLY want to hear some crazy gary bartz! Guy Berger Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 Chewy, There's a 2-albums-on-1-CD set on Fantasy -- Libra/Another Earth. Not earthshaking, but nice post-bop from the late 60s. The second album has Reggie Workman, Charles Tolliver, Stanley Cowell, Freddie Waits and (on one track) Pharoah Sanders. I guess it is somewhat underwhelming given the personnel. I assume you've heard his stuff w/Pharoah Sanders and McCoy Tyner? Guy Quote
jlhoots Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 I like There Goes The Neighborhood on Candid. Quote
Guest donald petersen Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 he made a boring mid 70s date for catalyst which you might like since it is a west coast date and it is pretty straight. it's not bad, i just found it boring. syreeta sings my funny valentine on it. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted May 24, 2007 Author Report Posted May 24, 2007 i havent heard any of those- ive heard music is my sancturary and nu ju ju street songs and like 1 other or so--- i wanna hear some crazy modern gary bartz bebop from the 90s or something?> does anyone have any bootlegs of him with the "SPHERE" group or stuff like that? thats what i want is some modern bebop gary Quote
John L Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 (edited) I like There Goes The Neighborhood on Candid. I like that one too, and it is very "straight ahead." Louis Hayes' "the Crawl" is also a smoking date with some fine Bartz. Edited May 24, 2007 by John L Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted May 24, 2007 Author Report Posted May 24, 2007 thanks ill look for the hayes::: hey you guys hey you guys i saw this one: gary bartz and eddie jefferson in 1987, live, + some singer, and they did a coltrane song and they did some blues and also bebop songs: gary bartz was KILLIN on it but i didnt get it cause it had all these stupid vocals, a la al jaraeu. all i can take of a.j. is about seventy-two seconds worth (aka: the intro to "moonlighting") and thats about it. he also ruined a jr montrose cd i wanted once-- live on fresh sound records Quote
Eric Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 I like There Goes The Neighborhood on Candid. Plus (all from the 80s/90s): MONSOON - Steeplechase WEST 42ND STREET - Candid SHADOWS - Timeless ALTO MEMORIES - Verve THE RED AND ORANGE POEMS - Atlantic EPISODE ONE: CHILDREN OF HARLEM - Challenge THE BLUES CHRONICLES - Atlantic LIVE @ THE JAZZ STANDARD: VOL. 1 - Oyo The one on Verve (France I think) has Sonny Fortune. Neighborhood is my favorite, bur Children of Harlem and Alto Memories are close seconds. Quote

That was probably this one: From your initial description of what you're looking for, I'd say the Candids are the ones to get, especially the two under Bartz' name. That's some good stuff there. JSngry Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 Leon Thomas = Al Jarreau Don't know about that, but it's not Thomas' most riveting performance by a long shot. His voice is still full, but his spirit sounds soft, almost New-Agey-Suppery-Clubby. I was actually embarassed to be listening to it in a few spots, and this from somebody who dug/still digs the late-60s/early 70s LT. Quote

I have heard Bartz live on several occassions and it has always been a riveting experience. There are actually quite a few Bartz bootlegs that circulate, including some with Sphere, McCoy Tyner and the Three Altos group with Sonny Fortune and Vincent Herring. You might also want to check out the recordings on Bartz' own OYO label, especially the first Live at the Jazz Standard disc, which documents a typical recent Bartz set. Quote
Guest donald petersen Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 chewy chew chew, the album i mentioned is not like the mizell jams. it is more straight ahead-mostly all acoustic. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted May 26, 2007 Report Posted May 26, 2007 Add my support for "There Goes The Neighborhood" on Candid. An interesting duo CD that has not been mentioned is "Gary Bartz & Peter Leitch - The Montreal Concert - DSM 3037". Bartz can also be heard on these two CDs under Peter Leitch's leadership: "Another Perspective - Concord 4535" "Colours & Dimensions - Reservoir 140" Don't miss "Sphere - Verve 314 557 796-2" with Bartz, Kenny Barron, Buster Williams and Ben Riley. That same group, with Ray Drummond in place of Buster Williams, can be found on: "The Jet All Star Quartet - Live at Jazz En Tete - Space Time BG9704" Quote

Louis Hayes' "the Crawl" is also a smoking date with some fine Bartz. Another for that one. And as an added bonus it has Charles Tolliver on it too. And John Stubblefield. Actually got to see that band live shortly after the CD had come out. Hayes was smokin' ! Edited May 26, 2007 by sidewinder Quote
