Marion Brown - Three For Shepp

I believe this Impulse! CD is long OOP - there's one last place I can check.

I don't really know Brown's music but I noticed two things:

1) Grachan Moncur III is on it

2) iTunes is selling it for $5.99, which seems reasonable considering there's no artwork etc.

How is this record? Does Grachan solo a lot? I'm very tempted.

I like it. It's one of my favorite Browns.

Not sure how long it's been out of print, not too long I don't think.

I'm not a big Moncur fan. . . he has as about as many solos as the other horns if I remember correctly. I sort of tune him out.

MartyJazz put the track "Spooks" on his BFT sometime back, and I regularly play it at maximum volume, as it sounds like Dixieland on speed.

I've listened to sound clips from the album, and have determined that this one track is NOTHING like the rest of the album. Mostly free jazz, from what I could tell. I guess it's alright if you like that kind of thing. Unfortunately, I don't; so, you can take this opinion for whatever it's worth.

Me too. It's of it's era, mid 60's new thing, but a wonderful example of that genre.

Great record... an early favorite from when I was just getting into the music.

It's interesting how Brown's work progressed/diverged from this point.

Oh, and yeah, Grachan does solo a lot.

Yep, "New Thing" stereo Impulse! Lps are going cheap on eBay, obviously downloading is cheaper, as the sound.

Go for it in any format anyway.
