JSngry Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 All Universal-owned stuff: http://www.dustygroove.com/browse.php?labe...1&format=cd How is this working anyway... Quote
Cliff Englewood Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 (edited) Funny you should post this today because yesterday I was buying a few CDs, even after I told myself I wouldn't for at least a month, , and I happened to see Dorothy Ashby -- Rubaiyat Of Dorothy Ashby in a second hand rack for a very reasonable €8. As I am a fan of Afro-Harping I decided I would go for it and after listening to it last night was complely blow away, it's an absolute mind bender, , and actually much better then Afro-Harping. So in answer to "How is this working anyway", on the strength of this one I would say very well. Edited June 21, 2007 by Cliff Englewood Quote
Guest donald petersen Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 yeah i was very impressed by that album too, on first listen. Quote

I have AFRO-HARPING & the earlier Prestige sides & was wondering about this one. On the basis of your rec, Cliff, I'll have to check it out. The Melvin Jackson has been discussed here recently as well. Quote
JSngry Posted June 21, 2007 Author Report Posted June 21, 2007 So how does a freakin' record store get to lease material from Universal, assuming that that's what's happening? Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 (edited) Well, I just ordered the Ashby and the Melvin Jackson... talked to a clerk at the store, and she thinks that DG is indeed licensing from Universal (and that the titles are available only through Dusty Groove). Age of the Boutique Label? Edited June 21, 2007 by ghost of miles Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 OTOH Caiman and Collectors Choice already have the Ashby listed, and Amazon says they will have it for sale as of 7/17. If I told you what program I'm going to use FUNKY SKULL for, you would not believe me... Quote
JSngry Posted June 21, 2007 Author Report Posted June 21, 2007 So it seems... Now, what are they licensing - master tapes, previous remasterings, or remasterings done for mp3 downloading? And what are they selling - CDs or CDRs? With what generation artwork? I just think it's weird?/cool? that an outfit like DG can walk up to Mr.Universal Music and essentially say, "Hey dude, I can sell a cupple hundred copies of OBSCURE-ISH TITLE X to my buddies, can we deal?" and that Mr.Universal Music essentually says, "Sure little fella, what's a good price for you? I wanna help!" Even if this was Bizarro World, I'd be taken aback if it were just all that simple and sunshiney-happy... Quote
Bluesnik Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 How is this working anyway... i've been asking myself the same question for some weeks now. is this licensed or isn't it? and if so why isn't this done more frequently? i mean why aren't more small labels doing that? but it's great to have a new source for reissues. haven't heard the Ashby CD but i have a vinyl rip and quite like it. it's a bit on the eastern/easy side but nothing wrong with me about that. i know the German Jazzanova guys love it. there's also a beautiful Gilberto Gil reissue on Water i've been tempted by in the last weeks. but it's a bit pricey (here in Europe, not on DG) and it's from his London days. i always prefer the brazilian material. and i always prefer the shops over the websites. JSngry Posted June 21, 2007 Author Report Posted June 21, 2007 Oh geez, just realized the this is in the Recommendations thread instead of the Reissues thread. A middle-aged man and his glasses should never be aparted, but alas... Mister Moderatorman, cudja mooooove this puppy to its rightful home? Quote
Guest donald petersen Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 but rostasi gave the ashby the highest praise possible!!! that is a recommendation!!! Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 (edited) I'm surprised that a major label is licensing their stuff to Dusty Groove. A 20 second peek at their website would show that Dusty Groove sells every bootleg that the Andorran pirates put out. For this illegal activity, they get rewarded with licenses? Stefan Wood Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 (edited) The real question is do the major record companies know that the Andorran stuff are boots? Edited June 21, 2007 by Stefan Wood Quote

Looks like an interesting first batch. We'll see what transpires. MG Yeah, but what will happen when Lonehill puts out one of these Dusty Groove titles? Will they sell it side by side with their own version? It just doesn't make sense for Verve to turn a blind eye to Dusty Groove's business practices now that they're working with them as a reissue label. At a minimum, they should have put it in their license that they can no longer sell bootleg material. Right now, Dusty Groove is selling several Lonehill/Gambit/Bootlegs 'R Us titles that are straight rip-offs of Universal product. It's a no-brainer to insist that they stop this per contract. Quote
ejp626 Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 I can weigh in here. I have two of these sitting on my desk. They are CDs, not CDrs. They are definitely licensed from Universal, and there is a little logo "Universal Music Special Markets" on the back. They are pretty much a straight transfer from the original LPs, with original cover and back reproduced on the insert, then the liner notes are repeated inside in larger type. The main difference is inside the insert, there is the Dustygroove website. Funky Skull even has a little of that faux ringwear on the cover. I think they have 4 CDs so far on the Dusty Groove label. I could definitely see DG trying to license more of the Cadet material in particular. I'm surprised that a major label is licensing their stuff to Dusty Groove. A 20 second peek at their website would show that Dusty Groove sells every bootleg that the Andorran pirates put out. For this illegal activity, they get rewarded with licenses? As far as I can tell, the majors have given up on this issue (Europe PD laws), at least as far as trying to keep it out of US stores. I can't think of many places you can't get this material. Jazz Record Mart carries Proper Boxes, and I bought Blue Moon sets from them as well. As far as on-line sites go, Amazon and CD Universe have virtually all the Lonehill/Definitive imports available. eMusic even has some of this available for download in the US. So I think it is close to pointless trying to roll this back -- it will only get worse. I half suspect Google will digitize all music everywhere and you will be able to listen to random tracks once you are a registered member (and then some hacker will figure out how to rebuild the old Napster/Kazaa). It really does seem like flogging a dead horse everytime this issue comes up. Anyway, I am very curious to see what gets licensed next. Quote

Claude Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 I think it would be best to ask Dusty Groove about these reissues. Maybe the "Dusty Groove America" label info is just an error. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Not likely if ejp has reissues in hand with dusty logos and Universal Special Product bylines! Quote
ejp626 Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 I can guarantee you that Dusty Groove has started this small boutique label and currently has 4 re-issues on it. We'll see where it goes next (though I do think if they had to choose between their own re-issues and Lonehill/Gambit/etc., they would probably stick with the pirates -- just a hunch). Quote
ejp626 Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 The irony is that I was about to sell these on the board, since I am desparately trying to pare down my collection by 100-200 CDs, but now I am listening to the Ashby again, and it is pretty interesting. I suppose I might as well face the fact that I won't ever be able to get my collection down to a manageable level. Eric Quote
