.:.impossible Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 I'd nominate Sangrey just cuz, but I don't see why you would need to be in NY, or anywhere for that matter, to do this job these days. Quote
Randy Twizzle Posted July 24, 2007 Author Report Posted July 24, 2007 I don't see why you would need to be in NY, or anywhere for that matter, to do this job these days. Probably because the "Real Jazz" channel has some kind of tie-in with JALC. There's even a channel ID where Wynton says something like "We need to get our station swinging" Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 Jazz channel? So they are combining all the channels that play various types of jazz into just one? Quote
JSngry Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 I'd nominate Sangrey just cuz, Line me up, Jack, I'm good to go. Just don't expect the programming to be exclusively from the 20th century, all-acoustic, and/or vocal-free. Doomed from the start, just the way I like it! :g :g Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 I'd also nominate Lazaro or Stevebop, but I think they like being where they are. Sounds like a good gig, though I'd wager the politics of the NY jazz scene would enter into it. Quote

Lazaro Vega Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 That would be cool. Ever see their performance studios? Quote
kh1958 Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 Of course, if the government lets XM and Sirius merge, there's only going to be one such job, not two. Quote
AllenLowe Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 I'd accept a job like that as a no-show - Quote
Brad Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 Sort off topic but I get XM and listen to this station frequently. My only criticism is that they seem to repeat some of the same songs. Terrence Blanchard seems to be a favorite, a little too much so. Quote
catesta Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 Jazz channel? So they are combining all the channels that play various types of jazz into just one? No, they've always had and still do have individual jazz channels. The straight ahead jazz channel is called "real jazz" then they offer other channels for "beyond jazz" and such. Surius does the same. Quote
AllenLowe Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 they are also adding channels for: "some jazz," "no jazz," "dead jazz," "what's jazz?" "who jazz?" "why jazz?" and "occassional jazz whenever we feel like it." Quote
.:.impossible Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 My brother had an XM receiver a couple years ago. I seem to remember listening to a "jazzzzzzzzzz... zzz... zzz... zzz... zzz... zz... zzzzz... zzz... zzz..." channel. You know "Jazz To Fall Asleep At The Wheel To On A Rainy Night" type shit. Quote
AllenLowe Posted July 26, 2007 Report Posted July 26, 2007 true - but they do post a warning on the station about listening to it at the same time that you're operating heavy machinery - Quote
felser Posted July 26, 2007 Report Posted July 26, 2007 they are also adding channels for: "some jazz," "no jazz," "dead jazz," "what's jazz?" "who jazz?" "why jazz?" and "occassional jazz whenever we feel like it." "jazzy wazzy jazz", plus the one that WMMR in Philly (the supposed "real jazz" station here, but it's awful now) actually inflicted us with: "turn on the quiet". Can "all kenny g, all the time" be far behind? Quote
paul secor Posted July 26, 2007 Report Posted July 26, 2007 No doubt in my mind that whoever gets this job will be a businessman/schmoozer first and a music lover last. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted July 26, 2007 Report Posted July 26, 2007 I prefer the "Chamber Jazz" channel, where modern musicians play exacting re-creations of classic albums. Quote
montg Posted July 26, 2007 Report Posted July 26, 2007 This would be a dream job. A huge library to choose from and 24 hours to fill everyday. Currently, the xm programming is relatively strong on the classic stuff but pretty weak on newer stuff (failing to venture beyond the J @ LC orbit). And, inexplicably, they program 'night time jazz' (read---'slow tempo boredom ad nauseum') after hours when, ideally, after hours is the time to be adventuresome. Quote
montg Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 (edited) Mark Ruffin is, apparently, the new pd--he made his debut today on xm. Off to a good start, spinning Trane, Burrell, Benny Carter, Tjader etc. Hopefully he'll find some time for music a little off the path too. markruffin Edited October 20, 2007 by montg Quote
Randy Twizzle Posted November 9, 2007 Author Report Posted November 9, 2007 Mark Ruffin is, apparently, the new pd--..........Hopefully he'll find some time for music a little off the path too. markruffin It seems to me that the channel hasn't changed much from the last PD. Almost every time I tune in I either hear self-consciously "jazzy" vocalists (please god, no more scatting) or well worn modern jazz standards like "Senor Blues" "Maiden Voyage" " "So What" "My Favorite Things" etc. It doesn't seem that there's much off the path right now. You'd think that a 24/7 "real jazz" channel would try to be less predictable. Quote
