pwn, or pwned = own, or owned (common typo, since the "o" is right next to the "p")

FTW = "Fhat The Wuck"? (okay, maybe not, but I could be right about "pwn" ;))

I bet pwn is derived from "pawn," maybe secondhand, a "lowly" form of ownership, eventhough wikipedia didn't say.

From http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=pwn (emphasis added)

1.pwn 5361 up, 355 down

PWN (verb)

1. An act of dominating an opponent.

2. Great, ingenious; applied to methods and objects.

Originally dates back to the days of WarCraft, when a map designer mispelled "Own" as "Pwn". What was originally supose to be "player has been owned." was "player has been pwned".

Pwn eventually grew from there and is now used throughout the online world, especially in online games.

1. "I pwn these guys on battlenet"

2. "This strategy pwns!" or "This game pwn."

What's with all the eleventyeleven!!!!!!!!!!!! crap I see from time to time, mostly on Fark.com (and there I almost always think it's making fun of something else).

Damn kids. And they need to get off my lawn too.

"pwn" has really expanded beyond its original geek-boy origin. When things aren't going well for the Yankees I check out their MLB discussion board and the only time I've seen that used is there, sort of as an obnoxious "QED".

I recognized that instinctively, without consulting Wikipedia or any other source. At any rate, saying (or typing) "pwned" when you mean to say "owned" seems absurd to me. Was it seen as a cool way to make fun of the guy that made the original typo, or what? Not sure why I'm asking, because I really CCL...

The "mistyped" substitution is common in this annoying form of 'coolness', the most common example being the intentional misspelling 'teh'. Of course it's absurd; we're over 15...

I knew "pwned" meant "owned," but I never knew why all of a sudden "owned" was being used all over the net to mean "you have been crushed into the dirt and completely dominated, you pathetic, laughable worm." I started noticing this on message boards over the past year or two--when someone scores a coup in a debate/pissing contest, someone else posts "OWNED!" or "PWNED!", sometimes adding the dreaded "lol."

And now I know--it originates in video games. One more mystery solved.

Sorry, I traded it in for more annoyance...

Thanks guys! It didn't occur to me to check Wikipedia.

There seems to be no recent phenomenon deemed too trivial to appear in the encyclopedia authored by Wiki (I knew ________, and Wiki is no __________ ). In fact, if it is recent and trivial, it is bound to have all the more information!

I don't think that using the word "owned" to refer to domination in a competetive situation originated in video gaming. I don't pretend to know the actual origin, but I've heard it used for years in baseball (a particular pitcher "owning" a particular hitter, for example).
